Beau Vines is going to be the “fanciest” place in town. It’s a steak house

Roma is good Italian downtown

Bristers, if it’s open is pretty good BBQ

Ponchitoula’s is pretty decent

Other than that, try one of the 74 El Jarrito locations for Mexican.

Utility Brewing has good beers and pizza. Raw I think may still be to-go only but really good sushi. Log Cabin is great for variety. I’ve heard Trios is good but I haven’t been there, moved away years ago but family still there. I’ve heard really good things about White Lightning

I like the skirt steak and quail at The Log Cabin with the roasted red potatoes that has onions, poblano, bacon, and cheese in it. They mesquite grill everything such as steaks. There is pretty much anything on that menu that the pickiest of eaters will like. Their Mexican offerings are tasty and so are their sandwiches. This place is underrated. That quail and skirt steak taste like what I get at high quality Mexican restaurants in Houston. It’s run by two boys from south Louisiana that went to Louisiana Tech. They also own Ponchatoula’s.

I grew up in Ruston. There is more there then when I lived there. But truthfully there is nothing that will wow you.

You were right I wasn’t wowed but everything was pleasant. We hit Porticos first on Friday night. It was perfect weather so the bar was opened so we could hear the musician from the patio. They have pared their menu down from what is shown on the website. Service was very friendly but they were out of croutons, avocado, and vanilla ice cream. We Ponchatoulas for pregame apps and again had super nice service from all the bar staff. Dinner after the game was at Log Cabin. I was craving a steak but settled for the skirt steak enchiladas and tamales combo plate and it was top notch. Again from the hostess to the service staff everyone was extremely welcoming. My takeaway from the trip is that while not a culinary Mecca the people/students of Ruston are really really good folks and I’ll be proud that my daughter attends school here

As I said earlier, I grew up there. I live in Lafayette now but have a niece currently going there and all my family is still in Ruston. Good people, not as clique as it used to be. La Tech PD doesn’t play games and even younger people I know have talked highly of them if they were needed.

Restaurant part is definitely improving albeit getting heavy on the chains but still plenty of mom and pop restaurants. Have her check out Lincoln parish park also. Definitely go to La Tech football games and tailgating, along with baseball. Ruston high has an old school football atmosphere and even folks not from there enjoy going to the games. Obviously plenty of churches so if she is someone involved with church there is plenty of options. Intramural center is also very nice

As far as safety most of the violent crimes never include La Tech students or random people, stays in the ghetto. Biggest issue is unlocked vehicles, your stuff will get stolen if left unlocked. Tell her not to walk alone on W. California ave at night, bordering the ghetto there. That’s where Griffs is, has become kind of bad recently (the area) not Griffs. Overall though La Tech and Ruston PD keeps a very safe environment. Old school police departments that wokeness hasn’t caught up to yet

When I attended Louisiana Tech in the late 1960's there was a restaurant in town called the "Post Office Cafe". They had freshly made home cooking everyday. It was very popular. I'm sure it's long gone now.
