For those in the Bham area or here for work/travel, new restaurant that just opened up in the Crestline/Mountain Brook area of Birmingham. New York style pizza. Really, really good. I highly recommend it. Got the Hot Honey last time we were there and it was delicious. They have some good cocktails and the general atmosphere is pretty cool. Pizza's were around $20 for a 16" pizza. Highly recommend if you get a chance to stop by.

How was the beer selection? Where exactly is it (Bham native and in Mnt Brook often)? Did they have outdoor seating?

We only went to Mafiosos a couple of times. We don't eat in Crestline very often. Back when Mauby's was there, we ate there a lot.

It was decent enough. It isn't a place that is going to be a pizza and beer bar. They are going for a little more "upscale" atmosphere, but still not be terribly pricey. When we went, had Cahaba Blonde and Trim Tab IPA on draft with frozen mugs, then your normal light beers, stella, peroni, heineken, and back 40 truck stop I believe. They actually had a good rum I like to make a rum old fashioned with, so that was great.

I think their menu has everything listed.

It is in the heart of downtown crestline village, like right at the main crosswalk in the middle of the main strip. They had 2-3 outdoor tables, but it is right there on the sidewalk, not like a patio or anything.

Mafioso's was mediocre. Had some great happy hours and I ate there a lot, but this place and that are about as different as can be. If you haven't been to Dyron's that is in the old Mauby's location, definitely worth making a trip as well. Very good.

We've been there several times and you're right, it is good. Not sure why we don't go there more often.

My wife is from that area and grew up on Davenport's. If we aren't going to our favorite pizza place (Tortugas), then we are going to Davenport's. Although, we do frequent Troup's Pizza in Cahaba Heights as we graduated Auburn with the owner and know them very well. In fact, we'll be there the next two weeks in a row now that I think about it.

Troup's is solid. I will have to checkout this new place. Lots of good food around Mtn Brook and Cahaba Heights these days.

Is a hidden gem when it comes to food. From Ms Myra's to Olive Branch to Foodbar or El ZunZun, there's a ton of very solid options.

Cahaba Heights has one of the more underrated restaurants in Birmingham - Satterfield's. I know it's pretty well regarded, but you rarely hear it mentioned in the "best" discussions, probably because it's been around for so long. I haven't been in a couple of years, at least, and need to change that.

I love Davenports. Grew up on it as well. I think it is seriously underrated, though admittedly its style can not be for people and I fully understand that.

I'll have to try them out.

Agree'd. Cahaba Heights has really come a long way in the last 4-5 years or so with their food scene. It has been awesome to watch.

I moved to bham two years ago and really surprised by the food scene. It’s very underrated imo and I will have to try Slim’s out

Have you ever tried tortugas down by the stadium? Had a coworker who swore by it but I haven’t got around to trying it

Oh very nice. Will be interesting to see the vibe of the place. The one in Mtn. Brook is such a great pizza joint. Even as an adult, you walk in and become a kid again when you see the arcade

Yes, although we like the Hoover location better.

Do this:

1. Make sure the Barons are in town and playing
2. Call Tortuga's downtown and order the pizza of your choice for dine in. Call about 10-20 mins ahead of your arrival. It takes them 30-45 mins to make a Chicago style pizza.
3. Eat pizza. Drink beer.
4. Go to the game and drink more beer.
5. End the night back across the street at Good People Brewing.

Makes for a good night.

PSA: Unless you grew up on Davenport's, the middle is a soggy mess that most people (like this white trash Hoover kid) aren't gonna eat. The Pro Tip is to order it EXTRA crispy.

Truth. Though, they’ve done a good job the last few times I’ve been with cooking it normally a little more. Whatever reason though, I love those messy middle pieces.

Also Bendy's next to Martin's may have better ice cream than Big Spoon. It's close. Though Doodle's is still good as well.

I actually don't like Big Spoon all that much. (Though they have some arrangement with Slim's so you can get a bunch of their flavors for dessert, among other things).

Big Spoon's quality is really good, I just don't enjoy most of their flavors. Bendy's is really good. As is Jenny's downtown. Big Spoon does have a damn good oreo ice cream sandwich though.

The owners are my neighbors. Great people and a great product. Cookie Fix has been a great new addition as well.
