Spinoff: 2022 Fish Sandwich Throwdown Results

Just to reiterate, I did a blind taste test of SIX fast-food fish sandwiches. Here are the results!
6th place: JACK IN THE BOX
This sandwich was just plain nasty. Not sure if the fish was fried in bad oil or what, but it had a bitter taste and was by far the worst of the bunch.
5th place: MCDONALDS
The Filet-o-Fish wasn't bad, but with the exception of the tartar sauce - which was the best of all the sandwiches I tried - it lacked flavor. The tartar sauce was the redeeming quality; the fish patty itself wasn't all that great.
4th place: ARBY'S
The 2nd/3rd/4th place sandwiches were all very close. The Arby's sandwich was good, and I'd get it again, but it lacked the "oomph" of the others that finished higher.
3rd place: POPEYES
This was the most heavily-seasoned sandwich of the bunch, but it was too salty in my opinion, and the seasoning and pickles were the dominant flavors. When I buy a fish sandwich, I want to be able to taste the fish. I wasn't surprised when it was revealed to be the Popeyes sandwich.
2nd place: WENDY'S
This sandwich had the highest-quality fish ("wild-caught pollock") of the bunch; it tasted fresh and overall it was very good, but not quite as good as the overall winner.
1st place: BURGER KING
In somewhat of a surprise, BK emerged as the winner. This sandwich wasn't just good, it was great. It had a perfect balance of flavors, and the slightly sweet bun and tartar sauce complimented one another perfectly. BK wasn't just the winner; it was the clear winner.

Thank you for your service!

Agreed with this assessment. BK seems to always have a taste advantage in most categories.

BK makes the GOAT fast-food fish sandwich and burger (Double Whopper w/ cheese and bacon).
But those double Filet-o-Fish’s aren’t too shabby either.

This is the type of content we need around here.

I did a boudin run a while back. I'm trying to come up with some new ideas. I was thinking maybe donuts next? The results are surprising when you're doing blind tests and don't know what's what.

Somewhat surprising. Would not have thought BK would win. The last one I had there was pitiful.
Like all fast food places, quality varies, but a good Arby's makes a good fish sandwich. There aren't many Culver's around, but they make a really good fish sandwich and Jack's has a nice flounder sandwich right now.

How did you manage to do a blind taste test with these?

Congrats on eating a bunch of garbage that nobody should eat

I went out and bought all six. Came home and my wife took each one out and secretly wrote what each one was, then laid them out. After I tasted them all she told me what each one was.

Interesting. Thanks for the thread. I can't say that I eat fish sandwiches very often but I may try a few.

This is the real journalism we've been lacking. Do hot tamales next, please.

I don't even know what the fish tastes like, because this is the only reason I ever get this sandwich. It’s my guilty pleasure, and I always order it with extra tartar. I could eat it with a spoon

I would rate Wendy’s over BK but that’s just me.

So blind as blindfolded and taking a bite of each or putting them all out unlabeled?
I will take a shot at the BK one to see what’s up.
Edit
Never mind. I see above

The spicy version of the Arby’s one is substantially better than the regular, I’m curious as to where you would rank it.

I like the idea, but where in the BR area do they even sell them? I'm thinking that's more of a New Orleans thing. My personal favorite tamales are sold in the MS Delta.

Two that are OK are at Pimanyoli's and the other at Doe's Eat Place. They are the MS Delta type of tamale.
