Styrofoam plates

Gris has me thinking about plates. We are empty-nesters now and typically re-heat left overs on styrofoam plates but often times I notice the styrofoam kind of melts, digresses with certain foods like meat and cheeses. It worries me that we may be eating styrofoam when this happens. Scared!
Does anyone have knowledge of this?

Don't buy styrofoam plates. If you do, don't use them in the microwave. This should clear up the issue

Styrofoam melts and is not fit for the microwave. Even the plastic solo plates will melt and become disfigured. Paper plates are safer and won't melt. I think they make some compartment style, but I'm not sure if the resistant enough to liquids. At least, the ones I'm thinking of don't seem like it. Chinet maybe?

I dont have knowledge of this but I cant imagine looking at this and thinking it is 100% safe to eat on. Come on

Always buy paper plates.

Styrofoam is not eco friendly and bad for the environment....that's why I don't use them

Perhaps I'm just dumb for buying them from the get go. Paper now. I hope we don't die from cancer. Ignant me

Same. I love styrofoam cups for cocktails. I buy the big boxes of them from Sam's.

I've always been intrigued by this. What do you love about it?

they keep liquids colder than solo cups. they dont sweat.

What Jones said. I double them and the drinks stay extra cold.
I double solo cups with a napkin between them to try to avoid the sweat and the wet napkins. I hate sweaty cups.

Styrofoam is just a terrible medium for plates they break easy, melt, react with oils/ solvents, catch on fire, and you can't cut on them. Paper plates are the only answer for disposable plates.
That said, Styrofoam Cups are the tits when it comes to cups, they insulate well hot or cold, and don't sweat. Anyone drinking a cocktail out of a Solo Cup is an amateur of the highest power(or doesn't have access to foam).

A 20oz bourbon and Sprite on game day is what you get to do in heaven every day

Serious question.
What is so difficult about reheating foods on regular plates and washing them after?
Rarely do we use disposable plates at Casa De Ruzil.

Styrofoam is made from hydrocarbons, i.e., oil. Do you not have a dishwasher? Or regular plates? I can understand using disposable plates while on a picnic, camping, etc, but it is completely wasteful to use disposable plates in a home kitchen. It costs about 20-40 cents to run a dishwasher (soap, water, electricity), and you can run it every other day if you're feeling super thrifty/don't generate a full load of dishes every day. $6-$12mo if you run it every day, depending on your water costs. Styrofoam plates run about $0.10 each.
Use the actual plates already in your kitchen....hell, break out the damn China and stop saving it for a mythical special occasion. Taco Tuesday is special enough.. Real plates are nicer to the eye and certainly to the environment. Stop already with disposable crap when it is completely unnecessary. Americans generate so much waste.....
Dish towels and rags are more enviro friendly than use once and toss paper towels, reusable mops are better than single use wet swiffers. Disposable items represent money thrown away and natural resources squandered.
