Substitute for Horseradish

As many times as I have tried the stuff, I just don't like it. Horseradish mashed potatoes, cocktail sauce, whatever, it doesn't matter. I was curious if any of you have a good substitute for it? Should I just use hot sauce? Some kind of pepper? Thanks for the help.

why would you want a substitute if you dont like it?

39 posts, bad F&D name, and don't like horseradish. BAN!!
There isn't anything I know of to replace it with except maybe some Chinese style hot sauces. But nothing approaches the bittersweet sinus cleansing hotness of HR.

my only substitute would be stone ground mustard, and a good bit of it

By substitute, I don't mean something else that tastes similar. I mean something else that serves the same purpose in a recipe (heat?). There are some recipes that I think I would like minus the horseradish.

Hey, we all have to start somewhere, right?

You mean like your acronym?

Thanks for the tip. Wish I liked it, but I don't. And I have tried it many times. Just one of those things, I guess.

I don't like horseradish either or wasabi but I LOVE mustard in any form- yellow, stone ground, spicy, powdered, honey-- all of them!

I don't like horseradish either. My substitute for cocktail sauce and tarter sauce is ketchup mixed with either Louisiana hot sauce or Tobasco. More often Tobasco.

hmmm...if you think of one of the classic horseradish applications - cocktail sauce - then i guess wasabi would work. and more tabasco. there really is now substitute for it. usually if you don't want it you just eliminate it.
off the top of my head, i can't think of any recipe (hr mashed potatoes, bloody mary, cocktail sauce, hr and panko crusted fish, etc.) that couldn't just be made without it. wouldn't be as good if you ask me, but if you don't like it....

After much thought on this if you want a good bit of hot, get some Chinese mustard, mix it with a bit of habanero based hot sauce. Don't ask me about the after affects, you are my guinea pig on this one.

I'm very surprised no one's mentioned sriracha yet, because it was touted here a couple of months back to be the savior of all condiments. Available everywhere that has an Asian section.

I don't understand the substitute part, if you substitute with anything that is gonna keep it tasting the same it's gonna have to be horseradish. If you want the same sinus effect without the same taste then the above is the best answer.

but assuming i'm confused, i'd go with dijon mustard if i wanted a substitute.

I considered sriracha, but I can see a robust mustard doing the trick, too.
