Okay hear me out……. When everyone willing gets a chance, go in your spice cabinet and smell inside the white pepper container and tell me it doesnt smell like a petting zoo. Like the identical smell of a bunch of goats and chickens pinned in a small area.

I promise it wont make you sneeze.
No im not drunk or high. Just got home from work and started cooking and smelled it for the first time and am mind blown how bad it actually smells.

Someone in here will back me up and I cant wait.

Just tried it, and I agree.... I have never associated it with a petting zoo smell though.

I knew it wouldnt take too long for someone to be curious.

What would you associate it with if I wouldnt have said petting zoo?

I’ve always thought it had a pungent , earthy , sulphuric smell. Same with thyme too some extent.

I have no idea what else it could be, my mind just wouldn't have made that connection.

I just made my wife try it, and she agrees as well. More specifically, she said like the reptile/snake room at a zoo.

we’ll just agree with a “general zoo.”

Google hits say that white pepper smelling like a barnyard is real. Something about the fermentation process of the peppercorns.

Smells like arse, but a good spice in recipes that call for it!

I can’t believe I got up and went to my spice cabinet for that. It just smells like white pepper to me. I was familiar with the smell already and didn’t find anything unusual about it. Definitely not getting zoo or barnyard.

Same here. I don't like it, and refuse to use it. I'm a black pepper man when I cook and I don't give a damn if it is not digested when eaten, I like the flavor it gives to my food.

My wife bought a small container of it and I never used it before giving it away to someone who does.

I use it in brown gravies when I want it to taste like grandma's. Otherwise I have no use for it.

I use white when called for in a recipe, but I also am a big black pepper fan.

I was eating dinner with my boss years back and after I shook black pepper on my Caesar salad, my boss said, "MD, I can have them bring another shaker if you need it."

It does have a "gamey" smell compared to black pepper
I use white pepper over black pepper 99% of the time.

It does have its own aroma, but nothing I’d associate with a petting zoo.
Not saying who’s right or who’s wrong.
Always have some on hand, use it in deviled eggs, potato salad, and as part of different rubs for grilling and smoking
