And the one on Sherwood for 42 years, that place is awesome. Hands down, the best BBQ sandwich in BR.
I forget about this place. We had lunch there yesterday, Holy shite it’s good.
Get the Jay’s Way pork poboy, add cole slaw.
Anyone have their cole slaw recipe?

Used to go in mid-70's, knew the owners....back then the pork and beef BBQ sandwiched were the same style as the Hi-Ho in Hammond. Great memories there.

The grandson of the original owner still owns and runs the Sherwood location. I believe a life long employee of the Gov’t location owns and runs it. It was left to him when the owner died (I maybe incorrect)

I thought the one on Sherwood closed last year but I saw the sign up the other day.
The bbq sauce is Blue Plate Concentrate and it’s my favorite bbq sauce. I have a gallon in my icebox. I grew up eating Government Street and was in Wooden Haven next door last week and stopped in and had a chopped beef poboy. Same as always.

No the guy bought it from Prothro a long time ago. I went to school with his daughter that owns it now and has run it for 30 years.

Yes, I think that's the only reason Blue Plate still makes their sauce.
I have a gallon I'm hoarding.
You can still get it on Amazon.

I found their bbq plate to be terrible the one time I got it. I go regularly to Government and get poboys. Never brought myself to try the bbq a second time.

the hickory burger with onions and cheese is the best burger in BR

I only went once, but I seem to remember the BBQ more resembled shaved meat and the BBQ sauce was mustard-based. Perhaps I'm mis-remembering

I never found the place to be very good in my experiences.

Place is overpriced and not good. If you want a sandwich you have to order 2 to be satisfied and thats like $16. BBQ plate is not good at all, although BR bbq sucks anyway

You are full of shite and don’t know what you are talking about.
A half poboy is $9.50, full poboy is $11. You eat a full poboy, you waddling away way too full.

I passed that place hundreds of times but never ate there. No one really spoke of it.

Seems a little pricey for Baton Rouge.

What exactly is the reason? I will be damned if I can figure it out.

Years ago, I did a side-by-side taste test of Blue Plate BBQ Sauce Concentrate (sweetened and diluted as directed on the label) vs Dreamland BBQ Sauce that I bought directly from Big Daddy. The taste was nearly identical, even though the ingredients are not.

I always thought the servings were skimpy. Not a good value.
