TulaneLSU's Top 10 chocolate chip cookie cakes

Friends,
I awoke this morning with a dual surprise. First, Mother was gone and a note rested on the foyer's Eugene Printz sideboard, which, like an angel in the outfield, catches the morning light well with elan and grace, thanks to its palm tree veneer. I expected good news, as it sat atop the second surprise, a chocolate chip cookie cake. However, the note read that she was meeting friends and family east of Destin today. She left at 3:45, shortly before I awoke.
It seems she did not want to invite me, probably because she knows I have been deep at work with another novel, which also why I have partly neglected you, my friends. I publish these novels pseudonymously, and have a large online following, believe it or not. I keep my personal writings here, for my dear friends. The fiction that seems much more popular is how I fund my travels and hopes. She simply wrote, "I'm away for the weekend at EOD. Be sure to keep your shirttail tucked and enjoy this cake. Love, Mother."
One would rightly argue that there is no dessert more American than chocolate chip cookies. The chocolate chip cookie, not apple pie, is the true American dessert, as it is usually sweet but can be rugged when necessary. It is highly individualized -- artists have a blank canvas upon which slogans or well wishes are easily emblazoned.
The history of the cookie cake in New Orleans extends back to 1979 when the first Great American Cookie Company opened in Lakeside Shopping Center. For 41 years that franchise had served and guarded that southerly corner of Lakeside, serving the best cakes in the South. Back then it was actually named The Original Great American Cookie Company. I suppose owners realized a business with six words in its name might be cumbersome to the average attention span challenged American. Most people I knew simply called it "The Cookie Company." By the mid-1980s there were franchises also in Oakwood, Esplanade, and Riverwalk Malls. Initially the company's big sellers were 12" and 16" cakes, along with its famous cookies. By the 1990s Dinky Doozie and Double Doozie cookies were quite popular. There was perhaps no more satisfying mall meal for a teen in the 90s than a slice of Brooklyn's own Sbarro's followed by a Cookie Company chocolate chip cookie. If I'm not mistaken, the owner of District Donuts got his culinary start at the Esplanade Mall Cookie Company. I wish his restaurant would sell a cookie cake, much like they sell a McKenzie's (W Esplanade-Transcontinental) inspired king cake.
Friends, let us eat some cookie cake together one day. May it be a slice from one of TulaneLSU's Top 10 chocolate chip cookie cakes:
10. Wegman's
The cookie cake industry has in the last two decades become dominated by grocery stores. Although most grocery stores make a good cookie cake, Wegman's is one of the best. If you are ever on the East Coast and do not trust me, I advise you to at least give Wegman's cookie cake a shot.
9. Fleur de Licious
I have not an answer what Fleur de Licious is. A friend from church brought us a cookie cake from this bakery, grocery store, or food truck about five years ago. Conversations during that meeting were so enrapturing that we did not talk about the food. Afterwards I kicked myself for not asking anything about the cake. Sadly, we never saw that friend again, as he had a heart attack the following week and the mystery of that Fleur de Licious cake died with him. I still have not been able to locate such a shop, but the cake was great.
8. Wilton's
Mother took me to a baking class run by Wilton's back around 2000. The teacher was a master baker and baked one of the best cookie cakes I've ever had. When I bake a cookie cake, which is rarely, I use this same recipe. It will win over even the most ardent sugar cookie fan.
7. Antoine's
I do not know if this is real or not, but once Uncle was given a Christmas gift of a cookie cake. It was in a plastic display and there was an Antoine's Bakery sticker on it. It was the only time I've ever heard of Antoine's making a cookie cake, but I have always questioned if it was just someone's homemade cake that they were passing off as Antoine's. Perhaps they were able to steal a stack of the bakery's logo stickers and realized they could do cheap Christmas gifts that looked not so cheap. Either way, it was a delicious cake that made Christmas 2008 that much better.
6. Winn Dixie
Each visit to the Winn Dixie bakery is a surprising experience. Winn Dixie has the best black and white cookies I've had outside New York. The cookie cake is also exceptional

5. Publix
Every time we go east of Destin, Mother gets me a Publix cookie cake. She knows I love them and she knows the trip is quite traumatic for me. The icing is perhaps the most buttery of them all, and I prefer only their chocolate and vanilla icing, as the other colors have faint flavors that I do not enjoy. The cookie is solid.
4. Carlo's Bakery
During my college tour of the East Coast, Uncle took us to Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken. There, knowing that I was feeling down after being mocked during the Princeton tour, he bought me a cookie cake. I devoured it. Although I have not had one since, I must say it was one of the best cakes I've ever had.
3. Sam's Club
Easily overlooked, there is no other grocery or bakery that produces a more economical cookie cake per ounce than Sam's. During a period in my life when I was trying to eat for less than $1 a day, the Sam's double cookie cake with icing in the middle was part of my diet, as it was my sweet which could last 43 days. At 34 cents per serving, it was my cheat, but gave me a food to look forward to every single day. I have not had a Sam's cookie cake in many years, but I cherish those memories of a cake that never skimped on icing.
2. Mrs. Field's
In the world of national cookie chains, Mrs. Field's always comes in number two. Some people have urged me to try Insomnia Cookies for years. While on my recent vacation to Auburn, Alabama I came across one in the town's downtown. Excitedly, after eating a lot of pizza that day, I ordered a cookie cake there. Unfortunately, it was dry and rather tasteless. Rouse's makes a better cookie, and Rouse's is not a top 10 cookie.
Mrs. Field's icing is nice, and the company's cake artists usually do a nice job. I have had two such cakes, both while on trips to Chicago. Both cakes were after the merger with our #1, and I suspect Mrs. Field's stole some icing secrets after the two became one.
1. Great American Cookie Company
The same year (1977) Debbi Fields was starting her cookie company in California Arthur Karp was turning his grandmother's cookie recipe into the catalyst for his mall business in Atlanta. I have tried contacting Mr. Karp multiple times to learn more about the transition from cookie to cookie cake. Unsuccessful thus far, I have come to the conclusion that GACC is the inventor of the cookie cake.
While doberge cakes are also known simply as birthday cakes in New Orleans, any child of the Metro of the 1980s or 90s recognizes a GACC cookie cake as the real measure of parents who care about their child's friends at birthday parties. Those cake punctuated with art and words and beautiful chocolate and vanilla florets encompassing an already perfect cookie. Forget Polo and Perlis, Jaguar and Mercedes, in elementary and middle school there was no status symbol more important for children than having a GACC cookie cake at your party. And for good reason.
Even today, GACC is the best eatery in Lakeside's food court. It simply is the standard against which all other cookie cakes are measured. If it is surpassed, I will tell Mother about the time I broke her vase and blamed it on Cousin.
I wish you each a happy Independence Day, reminding you that true independence from tyranny and liberty from death come from God, not man nor declaration.

There may not be a more overrated food than a cookie cake you come come up with 10? Congrats on something I did not even think was possible.

Friend,
There was no better surprise from 1998-2002 than a classmates’s mom entering the class with a Great American Cookie cake. Splendid write up.

Friend,
They can find me through TulaneLSU.
NIH, perhaps when the pandemic cools, we could attend church followed by brunch in the Quarter and dessert at Great American in the Riverwalk. We must be sure stout can also attend this time.

TulaneLSU,
I also enjoy a delicious chocolate chip cookie cake. My mother has made one for me every birthday. Only now do I realize I have been taken for a fool by not getting a high quality Great American Cookie Cake. I may not be maintaining the same level of relationship with my mother that you do with yours in the future.
Please start your Poor Boy tours soon. I will await impatiently.

Friend,
Still awaiting my invitation to TulaneLSU’s lobster steam. I do hope that I will be invited. Having a variety of cookie cakes for dessert would be a splendid idea!

The Sam's cookie cake is #1. It is the perfect amount of doughy, and the icing is awesome.
It is a regular staple in our household.
