What do you consider one of the better grocery store hams?

I know Fitzmorris used to pimp Chisesi ham for his root-beer glazed ham recipe.
Yesterday at Rouses I was shocked at the price variance for the two hams they had.
7 pound Hormel ham was $52.
Same says of some brand(sunny day maybe) was $13.
I’m assuming the $13 ham would be pretty bad.

You sure about that? The Hormel ham that you get the "free" turkey with is $2.99 a pound.

I usually try to get a Smithfield.

Maybe they screwed up with the pricing. I will go back and check this week because it did seem strange.

The Member's Mark 1/4 ham is one of the best I've ever had. I like Hormel, but the MM is markedly better to me. It's a nice change up from sandwich sliced ham- great for making homemade lunchables.

Know your hams:
(worst) ham and water product < ham, water added < ham with natural juices < ham (best). It's on the label.
In a grocery store, you will probably not find a ham that is not at least "with natural juices". Adding water increases the weight at low cost, and hams are sold by the pound.
A "ham with natural juices" can be pretty good. A real ham is best. The only brand I am sure of is Conecuh, but you have to drive to Evergreen, AL to get one. We used to get them in grocery stores here around the holidays. You can order one on the internet. Pricey, but worth it if you like ham. Don't let an amateur cook it.

That's the spiral sliced ham I've seen advertised in both Winn-Dixie and Rouses lately.
I got a Chisesi ham last week for $4.99 a lb.

This is what I use. I just buy a whole one from the deli. Unfortunately, it's way more expensive this way. It's worth it though.

Just an update that might be of interest.
This year, I got a ham from a local butcher that cures and smokes hams for Christmas. It was definitely one of the very best I have ever had, and everyone in the family agreed.

Lifelong New Orleanian here and my go to ham is Chisesi. I bought a whole ham a couple months ago for $4.99 a lb. and got several nice ham steaks and some sliced ham for sandwiches out of it and the leftover smaller end pieces were cut up to make a nice bag of seasoning ham for beans.

So, they don't carry Chisesi hams in the meat cases because it's probably 30+% more from the deli counter. I shop Rouses near me and have found whole, and half hams in their meat cases.

For Christmas I got a pretty good Hormal ham from Rouses for .97 a pound. That was great for a $9.50 ham.

Is what I use. I go a couple weeks o their factory on Jefferson Hwy right before Thanksgiving and get 3. I keep 2 in the fridge, 1 for Thansgiving and 1 for Christmas and the other one I freeze for Easter. Use to be about $85-90 for all 3 up until about 4 years ago. This past time I went it was $140 for 3 hams.

Fricks with bone "in natural juices." Not many places carry them.
I like to make pulled ham for the holidays.
