Is it that good of a place to eat? Packed last night and tonight when I drove by. Heard the salad dressing is well known. What is the skinny on this place. Should we hit up on it the next trip?

Great place. I haven't been in about a year but I've been a dozen times and always enjoyed it.

Yes, it's that good. Seriously legit.

Place is really good. That crabmeat and cream sauce appetizer is legit.

Place is major league overrated.
If you live on the Northshore it's probably worth trying, but it's no destination restaurant. I've been really disappointed the past two times I've been. You know it's not good when you don't enjoy a free meal.

Best restaurant in the state, IMO.

I've ordered or tried most of the menu.
Last time I had the Panned Veal. The veal was flavorless. Just a fried piece of veal that didn't taste salted. It's a traditional LA style Italian restaurant. They offer little in the way of variety or creativity. Also, in my experience, they have consistency problems.
S & J gets all kinds of love on this board and elsewhere. I think that's a big part of the reason we have so few good Italian restaurants.

Seems like you are in the minority. I have had some fricking fantastic meals there. Crab claws, crabmeat au gratin, redfish with their Nicholas sauce, trout, shrimp scampi, calamari...even the fried chicken is great.

Pretty sure Sal's brother owns/runs Impastato's in Metairie.

Pretty sure you are correct. The son or the nephew went to jail I believe after Katrina.

True enough.

Also true.

Either a troll attempt or someone needs to get out more.
S and J's is okay. It's an old fashioned restaurant with a lot of heavy dishes. I wouldn't make a point of driving across the lake to eat there.

Probably should get out more, but I don't like people and crowds enough to do it.

That place has been a hot spot for as long as I can remember. We had a summer place in Lacombe when I was a kid in the late '70s/early '80s, and it was a hot restaurant back then. And Lacombe is a fairly remote place. You don't pack a restaurant for decades in a place like that without good food.

This place has been packed for decades and I grew up eating there. I was childhood friends with the Impastato's growing up in Lacombe. We still go every chance I get usually about once a year around the holidays.
The marinated crab claws and Shrimp Scampi are fantastic!

We went with a group Saturday night for the 1st tine in decades, I was pessimistic. no restaurant can live up to the great memories I had of S&J. The last time I went it was in the old building and I soon as I saw the new (2001) facility I figured they must be doing something right.
The calamari as an appetizer was perfect, crisp and greaseless, if overcooked calamari turns into fried rubber band, this was very tender. I had the oysters and spaghetti, a favorite dish, great, my SO's trout almandine was perfect. Everyone at the table was very happy with their choices.
The service was befitting a place that has been in business a long time, very professional.
No restaurant is flawless through every dish on the menu, not going to happen, but is S&J wasn't a 150 mile round trip, I would be a frequent customer.
