I exclusively use peanut oil to fry seafood, potatoes, chicken, etc. While it's not the most expensive it's not the cheapest either.

Is there a healthier alternative?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the healthiest. Avocado oil is also a healthier choice.

I cook with extra virgin olive oil all the time but I'm not going to use it to deep fry. It's about $20 a gallon to fry with peanut oil. Olive oil would be $50 a gallon.

But you did answer the question...olive oil is the healthiest.

I wish there was a cheaper and healthier option than peanut oil.

I wonder if you can buy cold press peanut oil. It's my understanding that the issue with seed oils and their unhealthiness is the processing they have to go through to be extracted from the seeds.

Yeah, skip the frying and either broil, grill or bake.

It’s more important to fry it correctly.

lard and tallow are your two best options.
when I have neither I use peanut oil

it’s all expensive though unless you have a farm type supplier of the animal fats

Doesn't olive oil have a pretty low smoke point though? Oils start to break down once they're heated past their smoke points. Also, anything cold pressed will have a low smoke point and isn't ideal for frying.

Refined coconut or avocado oil are neutral oils with high smoke points that are considered "healthier" than your normal peanut/vegetable/canola oil.

Or you can go with tallow (beef fat), or ghee (clarified butter).

They aren't "unhealthy" they just lose some nutrients/taste when the oils are heated vs cold pressed as does any food you eat. Raw foods are better because they aren't heated/cooked. Don't let the oil retards corrupt your mind

Extra Virgin Olive Oil has too low of a smoke point for frying.

Olive Oil has a higher smoke point and can be safely used for frying.

410 is the smoke point for extra-virgin.

Beef Tallow. Absolutely delicious too. Just get real tallow, not the deodorized/hydrogenated version. Good luck finding it

There's truth in this. Correct temperature and time control can make the difference between your food being light and crisp and not a soggy sponge of oil.

This board has several posters that freak out when someone condemns their precious seed oils, but natural oils are the healthiest. These include lard and beef tallow (self-rendered and not self-stabilized preferably), olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil.
