Earlier this year, Gambit sat down with Where Black NOLA Eats founder Jalence Isles to talk about her group, the state of the Black-owned food scene in New Orleans and how to help our readers find new venues, reconnect with old favorites and generally support this vital part of the cultural landscape.

For our Fall Dining Issue, Isles agreed to explain the mission of WBNE and why it is so important right now. She also put together a list of Black-owned restaurants and culinary businesses she and members of the Facebook group are looking forward to eating at this fall. WBNE can be found on Facebook and on Instagram.

Theoretically, this could also be marketed toward those wanting the best chance of watching a murder with their dinner service. Or the opposite.

I checked the list. I knew Nice Guys NOLA on Earhart was going to be on it. We pass it before and after the Saints games and it looks like Mardi Gras on Canal St. over there. It is jam packed, even in the morning.

I read Gambit religiously. Over the past six months they may have had one or two white owned restaurants spotlighted in the weekly magazine.

Good. Support your own community. Dont give a damn how the black community gets their shite together, just get it together.

Jews do it all the time, take a lesson from them.

Can we all do this without repercussions? Or will some (one) group be disallowed...

Go for it.

Can only be hurt if you allow yourself to be.

Lot of great black owned restaurants in Nola.

I am in Nola everyday without issue.

I agree. I eat at way more minority owned restaurants than white owned. Doesn't change the fact that this is blatant racism.

Eh, minority restaurants go hand in hand with 'poor' restaurants. Takenit however you want, what it is. Besides a couple wealthy minority owners there are plenty of middle to lower owners.

Restaurant who can't buy press and can't afford a social media director to bring in patrons.

Not saying that being white owned is some advantage, but don't look at this as 'don't eat white' because I have never heard it presented that way.

To give you an idea, I have a half-assed instagram account for food in NOLA, 1/4 assed would be more accurate. Middle-class to poor owners are the ones who tag me the most and try to get reposts. Small business works their arse off in these sutuations.

Most local restaurants go hand and hand with 'poor' restaurants, regardless of race.

I've been to Alon's bywater house. He ain't struggling. The ratio is heavily skewed one way for whatever reason.

All that said, dont get caught up in the 'black' and instead look at the restaurants. High road and all that shite.

Why would you do that to yourself? Is NPR preset on all of your listening devices too? The only thing the Gambit is good for are the sudoku and crossword puzzles and sopping up crawfish juice. Clancy bears a great deal of responsibility for the condition the city is in with his endorsements of the shittiest of candidates. He’s the poster child of white guilt.

I agree with all that you typed about Clancy. He’s scum.
I do grab a copy or Gambit every week though. Mostly to see current event promotions and the restaurant and bar stories, but I do like to read and laugh at their editorials and sad political crap.

Sounds ok to me. As long as I know where Black Nola is eating I can go somewhere else.
