I have a convention coming up in a couple of weeks in Indianapolis. I've never been, and need some advice.

Dinners are primarily taken care of/booked for clients and colleagues, but what are some good spots for lunch?

I'm staying at the Renaissance Indianapolis/Carmel North if that helps.

Just head up the street to Carmel Arts District. Tons of great eateries. Muldoons, Fork and Ale, Monterrey Cuisine are all solid...just to name a few. Sun King Brewery is a great spot to have a beer and sit outside in the giant courtyard.

A little further up (not far) at 146th and Gray Rd are two places I love: Slapfish and The Local Eatery & Pub.

Your hotel is in the burbs and there is not much that I can recall within walking distance. Mainly other hotels and medical offices and such.

As mentioned above, downtown Carmel is where you want to go, and it's just a short drive. Just walk around and check it out. Joe's Deli is interesting. The Pint Room is a good place to get a meal and a beer. There is a pretty good variety of restaurants in the area

Just park and walk around.

Try to get downtown to visit the Slippery Noodle for a bite or a drink before you leave.

Last time I was Indianapolis, our hotel outside downtown was next to a diner called Four Seasons. Great breakfast place. Serves lunch and dinner too. I wouldn't cross town to go to it, but if you are close it's worth a visit imo.

We are going at the end of the month and staying in Keystone. Any additional recommendations by anyone? Lunch or dinner.

Keystone has a huge mall and I didn't go out that way much for meals. There are a bunch of strip malls along 82nd with a lot of restaurants that are regional or national chains.

You are probably an equal distance from Carmel and Broadripple. Carmel is fancy and well manicured (and discussed above).

Since Carmel is discussed already, Ill talk about Broadripple and vicinity. Broadripple is more authentic, you'll find more grafitti, and has a younger crowd. Broadripple is where you would go for pizza, burgers, and tacos for lunch, but you'll find some real gems for dinner especially along the canal.

Northside Social, Petite Chou Bistro, and 317 BBQ are all good. Rise n Roll bakery is great for donuts and breakfast. Not many chain restaurants in Broad Ripple although Lou Malnatis is right there on the north side of the canal.

In the general area is Meridian House, which is about 4 blocks from where I used to live, and very good for dinner. Cafe Patachou is great for brunch/ breakfast and Mama Carrolla's for Italian. Delicia, and Root and Bone, are good, as well.

This is a beautiful area to drive around in, especially Meridian, Pennsylvania, Guilford, and Winthrop, South of the canal and North of 45th. Gorgeous old homes in an area that is mostly residential with pockets of commercial, where you will find restaurant gems. An eclectic blend of Tudor, colonial, cape cod and craftsman houses.

One casual and inexpensive place is called the Aristocrat, and it's good for comfort food - lunch or dinner. You can imagine that it probably hasn't changed much in 75 years. Beautiful dark wood bar, and a cool atmosphere. It's right across the street from Fresh Market on College Drive.

While in the area, check out Butler University. That is a pretty area, too.

To the OP. If driving to/from your hotel to downtown, try taking Meridian Street. It goes all the way into downtown from your hotel. It's a beautiful drive, especially after you get south of the White River and North of 40th. A lot of 100 year old houses.

This came highly recommended but the only reservations left were 10 pm and that is not going to work on this trip.

this also is not what we prefer

This has a lot of potential.

Thank you for taking the time to give me all of this information. I have seriously found some of the coolest places all over the country just by asking on TD. I am going to refer back to this thread when we are there.

Just realized The Aristocrat is across the street and 2 blocks south of Fresh Market, not directly across the street. Its definitely old school - the kind of place to get a good bowl of French onion soup, reuben, or shepherd's pie.

Covid has changed a lot of things. Places have closed, changed, or may have lost their mojo. Go with your gut. If a place looks good and is rocking...

BTW, I assumed you were staying around Keystones Crossings, near the mall and hotels.

The Eagle downtown has an amazing chicken sandwich

Bazbeau’s Pizza was always good. Same with Bru Burger but only the downtown spot. The one in the burbs sucked.

Broad ripple and Fountain Square are two good areas that have a lot of local places.

Yeah, I focused on Broad Ripple because its closer to Keystone Crossing, but Fountain Square is is a good area, as well. I also lived right by the canal between Broad Ripple and Butler - two blocks west of Meridian, so I'm much more familiar with Broad Ripple.

One more thing in Broad Ripple - Brics Ice Cream is a cool spot right next to the Monon Trail (bike trail that traverses the entire city), so people watching is great.

Also, the Crown Hill National Cemetery is right there in North Indy. A cool place to visit and it's huge. Benjamin Harrison and John Dillinger are buried their.

There was a really nice restaurant I ate at on Meridian Ave but I can’t recall the name. It was fantastic but very haute cuisine type thing
