Why do people use Italian dressing as a marinade?

I will never understand this. I have friends that will buy some beautiful steaks and then marinade them in Italian dressing for 24 hrs. They'll do the same with shrimp, chicken leg quarters for the grill, or almost any type of protein. What in the blue frick is the point of getting a steak and slathering this horse shite all over it? It doesnt take like a nice juicy steak anymore, it tastes like Italian dressing.

Wow, thanks. I have been wondering this myself.

Maybe they buy inferior proteins and they are trying to hide that fact?

It complements the cream cheese and bacon wrap well.

A guy I used to work with had a decent chicken marinade that was half italian dressing. The end result was very tasty.

Having said that, it's not what I prefer and I would never use it on a steak.

The thing is that you can prepare your own marinade for whatever purpose and it'll be ten times better than Italian dressing.

Why do they choose that as a marinade: it has oil, acid, and seasoning all in one package, so as a generic marinade it's pretty easy.

Why would you marinate a high quality piece of meat: I wouldn't and don't know why others do.

I've seen you marinate before dinner many times, wouldn't say it's any better.

I agree. I use light Italian dressing as part of my chicken marinade and one o my sandwich dressings, but not on a steak.

Because it is quick and easy and the result is not that bad. That said, I do not do this. Marinating in wishbone is so 1990's.

You must hang out with some weirdos if they are marinating a steak in italian dressing.

I can see chicken breasts because it's easy and chicken parts are cheap as hell.

my friend marinates steak in the KC Masterpiece steak marinade then burns the hell out of them. I feel bad for him every time he eats steak.

Because they're white trash obviously. Duh.

I don't know anyone that marinates a steak in anything for 24 hours.

I use Italian dressing for all of my steaks. I cook it well done to ensure all of the marinade stays locked in, then compliment it with a little bit if Hunt's ketchup to enhance the flavor.

The only thing I might add a little Italian dressing to marinate with is chicken, but it is just part of a marinade. Like an above poster mentioned, it has oil and seasoning, so it makes some sense to use a little, if you want to marinate something . Obviously, you wouldn't use it on a nice steak or something of the sort.

It's looked down upon by people who have never been to a hunting camp...
