Will a two burner 24,000 BTU gas grill produce enough proper heat for a steak?

My long time gas grill has finally died with no way to refurbish it. Home Despot had this one for dirt cheap, so I picked it up thinking that I could grill corn and other veggies along with an occasional steak when I don't want to mess with charcoal. I've never owned a gas grill this small, and I'm concerned that the two burners won't get hot enough for good steak results.

It's a long shot that anyone here has this particular model, and you can save the "should have gone for a better grill" scolding because this baby was dirt cheap, is temporary, and came with a free tank of gas. It's still in the box, so I've a chance to return it.

24,000 BTUs hot enough for a steak?

Likely. But cooking that same steak on high heat in a cast iron pan while basting with clarified butter than finishing in hot oven is a much better way to go.

I'd agree 100% if it weren't for the indoor smoke issue.

What size is the grill. A BTU to sq inch of cooking surface is an imperfect but a pretty good general judge of heat potential. I have a 2 burner gas grill at home it has 55,000 btu's heating about 515 square inches of cooking surface. I get about 850 to 900 degrees at the cooking surface.

Based on that size and if the heat were spread fairly evenly that should get you 5-600 degrees. If there are glaring hot and cold spots then the hot spots may be hotter than that.

You should be fine. Get some ceramic briquettes and make a smoker box out of tin foil. Just put a few wood chips, they will add a touch of flavor without actually smoking.

I would crank both the burners and let it go for 30 mins, to cook out any new smells. I'll bet youre surprised how hot you can get it.
