Yan Can Cook

Anyone here watched Martin Yan back in the day? Wife and I were flipping through the TV last night. Simply Ming was on. I started watching and the show is just boring. Ming is pretentious and just not entertaining. It got me thinking of Yan Can Cook, maybe because Asian I don't know. I switched to the Roku, went to YouTube and watched some old Yan Can Cook episodes. I forgot how good and entertaining this guy was. Years ago my grandma would watch this guy and I'd watch it with her when visiting. Good stuff

Saturday mornings at the barber shop with Justin Wilson, yan can cook, and this old
House were amazing. What kicked it up a notch was the fat barbers arguing over which one of them was there fattest.

Yan is still on CreateTV. It'll just be limited series so it's like Taste of Asia with Martin Yan.

The video of him breaking down a chicken with that massive cleaver is impressive.

Ming Tsai used to have a show called East Meets West I believe on Food Network in the early 2000s. I had never heard of fusion before and he made some really compelling dishes.

My mom went to a book signing of his back in the day. I wonder if she still has her signed cook book.

I like Ming Tsai.
I don’t find him pretentious, he grew up in his parents’ restaurant and he makes food through a second generation lens/palate.
Yan can definitely cook, but he’s almost a Chinese minstrel show character (did those exist?). His Martin Yan’s China cookbook (there was a companion PBS series) is a nice book; lots of pics and clear instructions. Not quite as good as Grace Young’s Breath of a Wok or Stir Frying to the Sky’s Edge, but still very good.

I met him twice at a big annual trade show. He would shill for GE and put on cooking demonstrations in the GE "booth" (huge area of convention floor real-estate as you might imagine)
He was his normal funny TV self while cooking on his stage and then handing out sample plates. He'd ask questions and award signed cookbooks to winners. I of course gamed the system by learning the answers and returning to ensure I won a cookbook :)
Behind the scenes he was a bit more business. Not rude, not impolite, mean anything like that. He can switch it on for the camera though. He is still a childhood hero and helped shape my love for cooking. He was kind enough to personalize both books to me and my wife, who was not at the show, but also grew up watching him in her youth.

My mom forbade me to use the cleaver after I discovered Yan Can Cook.
I still wish I had his dual wield cleaver skills.

I have his cookbook and I loved to watch him on PBS in the 90's.
Tomato beef is my favorite.

Use to love his show, especially when he's say "Mix em um up" when putting ingredients together.
Damn good with that cleaver too when prepping his food to cook.

I met Chef Yan when I worked as a store chef for Kroger. We were responsible for prepping his demos during Wine Atlanta in 2009.
He is the most genuine and nicest guy I have ever met. Really took the time to thank us and ask us about the prep. Even offered suggestions on how to do things more efficiently.
Had a personality larger than life.
My childhood flashed before my eyes in a surreal moment that I will never forget.
He is one of the reasons I got into the profession.

Heard a story once that he was drinking red wine while eating fish. When someone said he should be drinking white wine he said the fish didn’t know what wine he was drinking.
