This is my favorite game of all time. Apparenly there's updates and extras:

One of the greatest role-playing games of all time is now available on PC. Today, Square Enix unexpectedly launched Chrono Trigger on Steam, with an updated version of the SNES classic that will include a handful of welcome features and additions. The PC version of Chrono Trigger will include what the developer describes as “optimized visuals designed for modern PCs,” as well as a re-recorded soundtrack that was supervised by original composer Yasunori Mitsuda. It will also include the two bonus dungeons that came with the Nintendo DS and mobile versions of the game, and a much-welcome autosave feature. Additionally, those who purchase the game before April 2nd will get a few bonuses, including digital liner notes from Mitsuda, a digital five-song medley, and a handful of high-definition wallpapers.

Spoiler alert: This PC port with "optimized visuals designed for modern PCs" is just the mobile port. I’m not kidding. Even the UI wasn’t changed.

I was disappointed in Chrono Trigger. I don't see how it can be considered the best RPG on the SNES when you have FFIV and VI on the console.

Chrono Trigger doesn't require any grinding, is perfectly paced, and doesn't outstay its welcome. However, if you want to keep playing once it's over, it rewards you through its New Game+ mode and its mutliple alternate endings.

Having said that, I have zero interest in buying this half-assed port. The SOM released earlier this month also looked like hot garbage. These games both deserve better.

What's the price on steam? If it's any more than $5 I wouldn't buy it even though I really enjoy CT. The rom works fine. I don't care about "optimized visuals". I will happily hit f1 to save when I want. Instead of cash grabbing this, the developer should've just bought or copied the fan made successor and made stardew valley type money.

I found the story to be nonexistent and the world to be super tiny.

Drean Team:
quote:
The Dream Team is a term Square gave to five people who worked on the development of Chrono Trigger. All five also appeared in the Dream Team ending for the game. The Dream Team consisted of:
Akira Toriyama (DBZ, Dregon Quest)
Nobuo Uematsu (FF Composer)
Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest designed)
Kazuhiko Aoki (FF series battle and event designer)
Hironobu Sakaguchi (Creator of the FF series)
It just holds (along with VI) a special place in my heart. Back in 1995 this game was groundbreaking. Included time travel, game has 13 endings (!) accessible in different ways, first ever game to do that, and it has New Game+. (also a first in the industry)
All of that back in 1995 was pretty groundbreaking.

Did you play it just recently or back in the 1990s?

I don’t understand how square is so lazy with their ports. I love snes and ps1 era square games but I’m not gonna pay 15 bucks for a mobile port. I’ll play the originals on an emulator instead.
Go get fricked, squeenix.

It's a damn shame what they did to this part and pricing it $15 for that matter... I will happily stick with the DS version, which is the version they should have ported in the first place.

It's the shitty mobile version with the DS extras.

I can understand 6 being better (overrated opera scenes notwithstanding) but 4 isn't even in the same galaxy.

Chrono Trigger was nothing different or more special than Secret of Mana
I would argue SoM was more enjoyable than the former.

6 was a fantastic game, but Chronotrigger was just better. CT had a deeper story and a more fun combat system. In it's day it was among the most revolutionary games of the day. I will say that FF6 had a better advancement mechanic and was equal to CT in some of their character development.
A lot of what ChronoTrigger did has been done, and done better since. . .but you have to view them in terms of their day.
quote:
Nintendo Power magazine described aspects of Chrono Trigger as revolutionary, including its multiple endings, plot-related sidequests focusing on character development, unique battle system, and detailed graphics.
Bolded is probably my favorite thing about the game. Each character has a deep back story, with long and involved quests that flesh out the backstory further. . .that is intertwined with the greater plot. And at the end, you are satisfied that everyone's story and character arc is complete.
ETA: I still get misty-eyed when Robo tries to talk sense into his "brothers" and the subsequent tragedy. . .

Why does Square insist on making their classic games look worse? They did such a shitty job with this port that you can actually see square graphic tiles on this. It's most noticeable anytime that trees are on screen.

It amazes me how almost every time the original version is better. And I am not just talking about the graphics How out of touch are they?
FF7 remake scares the hell out of me.

I thought it was great and for a classic turn based battle system the battles were pretty fun
