I recently moved and when I plugged my PS3 back into my TV via HDMI.. There was no sound. I go into settings->Sound->Audio Output and select HDMI and hit automatic setup and I get an error message that reads: "This HDMI device cannot be used for audio output".

I searched google as well as here and didn't find anything.

The system used to work just fine.. Need assistance, over!

I know this may sound crazy, but I have heard of this little fix for other small HDMI audio problems. Try reversing the HDMI cable... meaning the end that is plugged into the PS3 needs to go to the TV. I read about this on another forum, and although I can't remember this guys particular problem (i think it was audio and video out of sync) this helped him and a few other posters. Worth a shot anyway.

I just tried that. No luck.

Could it be a firmware problem?

Possibly

If it is the old fat PS3... turn off the PS3 via the switch on the back. Then hook everything up the way you want it. Now while holding down the power button on the front of the PS3, turn the power back on via the switch on the back. Keep the front power button pressed down. It will beep like normal but keep it pressed and within 10 seconds it should go into the video reset (i know your problem is audio, but since it is the same cable why not try it)

If it is the new slim PS3, power it off, connect everything, hold down the power button. It will beep like normal, but keep the button pressed and after about 10 seconds it should enter the video reset.

hmm... the only thing i would know to do now would be a hard reset, but you would need to back up all of your save files and game data.

try hooking it up to a different TV or using a different HDMI cable.

does your TV (or perhaps Receiver for surround sound) have an optical input for audio?

I use HDMI to the TV for video but my audio runs through an optical line to my headset transmitter

Hard Reset/Factory Reset

quote:

Sony PS3 Slim factory reset/format guide

When formatting/restoring the PlayStation 3 there are five different options to choose from but only one of them (not stated in manual) actually performs a full factory “out of the box” reset.

The following options can all be located within the Settings > System Settings menu (excluding the hard reset option).

Note: None of these options will delete your PSN account or trophies (if synced).

1.) Quick Format

In a nutshell the quick format option will simply erase all the data (saves, videos, music, etc.) on the drive. You may however be able to restore this data via specialized data restoration software but don’t count on it.

Note: The option will not erase your user profile(s).

2.) Full Format

Similar to quick format this option will delete all your data with the exception of taking up to 25 hours (or more) depending on the drive size. Software data restoration is pretty much out of the question here. I recommend this option if you’re planning on selling your console.

Note: The option will not erase your user profile(s) and will automatically shutdown the machine after completion.

3.) Restore Default Settings

This option will restore your PS3 back to its basic fail safe settings (not factory default). Even by doing this option your PS3 user(s) will still be active and your PSN account(s) sign-in details will still be stored. Also the clock will still be set and controller(s) will still be paired.

4.) Hard Reset

This option is usually performed when connecting the PS3 to a different display. To perform a hard reset make sure your console is turned off. Turn the console on and keep the power button pressed in for a few seconds until you hear a beep (apparently it’s a triple beep on the older PS3). Your system will be restored to fail safe settings as per the option above (3).

5.) Restore PS3 System

The last option is actually the real deal. This option not only restores the system settings but also performs a format (full or quick) but there’s a catch (that’s not stated). Unlike option number 3 above the restore performed here is actually a full factory reset. This option will not only delete all your data but will also remove your PSN ID sign in details (not actual account), reset the internal clock, delete user profile(s) and un-pair the controller(s). This is the option to perform if you want to reset your PS3 to out of the box condition.

Important note:
quote:

will also remove your PSN ID sign in details (not actual account)
This will not delete your PSN account, it is still on the PSN servers, but it will remove it from your PS3, along with any other accounts and user profiles. So be sure you know your login/password details for your account.

And of course, it is no guarantee that this will fix your audio problem

Have you verified the hdmi cable works on a cable box or another source?

Start with the simplest issue first, try a new HDMI cable. If that doesn't work you need to isolate the issue - try the PS3 in another HDMI port on the TV, hell if you can try the PS3 on another TV. - If the PS3 works in either case, then there is an issue with the TV or HDMI port. If the PS3 does not work, then the issue is the PS3, in which case you are screwed.

Just to verify, do you have other HDMI devices that will work in the same HDMI port the PS3 is hooked up to?
