I hear you, and I agree with you, but they will find a way to make it suck.

Very few companies could do it right. Bethesda already has Skyrim and a new Elder Scrolls game coming soon. Rockstar has their niche in the GTAs and Red Dead. I don’t know if I would trust a game from another company not to suck.

Massively established IPs can be tough. You could say the same thing about LotR.

Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I enjoyed Lord of the Rings Online. They nailed the aesthetic in the zones, the questing and exploration felt rewarding and organic, the classes were solid (sometimes even unique and inspired). And I’m a Tolkien fanboy. My hopes were very high when I started the game.

I think an ASOIAF game set in the world in an earlier period (such as during the reign of one of the less fleshed out Targaryen monarchs) would be ideal. The problem is that the series history is almost overly fleshed out. You need some blanks in the story to allow the game designers some creative license.

Interesting thing about the Witcher games is that they are sequels to the books. And when the games were made, the show didn’t exist yet as a jumpstart. Honestly, it was pretty ballsy of them to do that.

There are Skyrim mods for this.

Also, there was a CKII mod, which actually seems more appropriate to the tone of the show.

It had early issues, but it's a very good game now.

I didn’t play until the ps5 release but I really enjoyed it and had zero performance issues. It was clearly rushed.
