Is there a way to play GTA online (for PC) without downloading GTA V?

I'm a bit of a gaming noob when it comes to the GTA world, so please don't bite my head off.
My laptop has a bit of a lag when playing GTA V, which is apparently fairly common. I've never played GTA Online though, and was wondering if it's a more stable gameplay than the native game.
Problem is that this machine is so loaded up at this point, I only have about 12GB left of storage on it. Is there anyway to play some version of the game online without having all of the GTA V files installed?
I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.

I don't see how, it's essentially the same world. It's a large download maybe 100GB

I'm sorry to say this and I'm too drunk to explain better, but you are so unbelievably inept when it comes to computers and video games it hurts me. Simple answer is no, that's not how games work.

I guess he missed the 'noob/don't bite my head off' rub.
My desktop plays it fine but I just solo the game. Also, the only other gaming I really do is Fortnite and Minecraft with my kids.
But it's cool. I'll just go frick myself.

Depending on what kind of ports your laptop has, you might be able to get away with an external drive. It's obviously less than ideal, but I can't really think of any other way.
Let us know which ports you have, and we can make suggestions.

To answer your question sans snarkiness, no - the two are really just the one game in different modes. That's why you can jump back to the single-player mode and then the multiplayer version without exiting the game and entering back in.
This differs from things like the older COD games Zombie modes, which would launch a completely different executable. Those, in theory, could have potentially been separate installs (but still shared some resources so it's not like you would have completely eliminated every file used for the single player mode).
