I will say that the only two systems literally everyone I ever knew had were the NES and PS2. Their market penetration had to be about as close to 100% full potential as you'll ever get from a home console.

Nah, if they are correct in the number of systems they produced, at this point, they almost certainly sold nearly all of them. Unless one is inclined to accuse them of lying about the number they produced, balking at the sales number seems silly to me.
