Witcher 3 help: Loot hoarding, selling, crafting, and other tips
Posted on 12/19/19 at 6:50 pm

So I've been playing this game for a bit now and quite enjoy it.
However, I've found I'm doing the same thing I did in Skyrim which is hoard all the loot I have picked up to this point. Currently I have about 10k gold and am lvl 23. I use the Cat School Gear (armor and swords and have basically committed to the quick attack/dodge/quen method of fighting). I also have 7 spare skill points as well and haven't put any into potions/alchemy so if there's any especially useful ones for that please let me know.
Basically looking for some tips on how to optimize my build at this point, items to dismantle vs sell, if there's certain runes I should buy for my weapons/armor, etc.
I have a rough count of some of the stuff I've hoarded in the chest and think would be worth converting to crafting materials/selling and realize that shopkeepers have a limit of gold per day(s):
- About 250 swords from Magic-Common... I was going to keep the Relics (probably another 30-50) that I don't use cause they seem unique, but am thinking maybe they'd be worth dismantling into crafting items as well since I won't be using them anyways.
- About 150 armor items I don't use
- 16 Horse items (blinders/saddle/saddlebags) that are obsolete at this point
- 250+ skins/hides of various animals
- various other 'common' items like rakes, fishing poles, skulls, etc.
possibly more valuable items:
- Fisstech
- Dimeritium shackles
- various gold/silver items
- various runes...wondering if I should sell off the shittier ones and use the better ones for my gear
Any herbs for alchemy worth looking into buying or should I just look at what I need for upgrading each type of potion/oils/bombs and search around for merchants to get those specific herbs? Most of my oils/potions are at atleast enhanced. If this is the case I'm assuming I should probably do the same for decoctions (haven't made any yet).
Like I mentioned above I have some runestones of various quality, but I have never put them into my weapons or armor cause I kept changing gear up to this point. Should I go ahead and put some of the better ones in and sell off the rest?
Appreciate any help.

The only weapons and items worth crafting are the Witcher gear until you get to the dlcs. You don't need the vast majority of what you have. I never crafted a rune, just used what I picked up along the way.

So you’re the exact opposite of me.
My arse sold anything and everything that wasn’t bolted down.

Dont hold on to too much useless shite, it really slows down your inventory menu.
Horde and use alchemy potions tho, that shite op

alchemy is a must. It takes some time to get acquainted but once you have down what to use when you just go beast mode on everything.

I’ve played through about a dozen times...
Dismantle equipment that gives you dark steel/iron, meteorite and dimeritium ore/ingots/plates. Those are needed for your high-end Witcher gear. My technique is to sell normal/blue weapons/items and dismantle epic gear if it gives me one of the above. If not, or if I feel I have enough already, sell that shite, too.
Dismantle shells for pearls/black pearls. Keep empty potion bottles while you’re slowly crafting all the recipes. Sell everything you else. All those pelts, rakes, axe handles...get rid of them. That will change a bit when you get to Blood & Wine DLC, just check crafting requirements for gear before selling. Again, just don’t hoard. Don’t need to.
Don’t sell any monster guts, hair, claws, etc. You’ll need to dismantle some of that on a case-by-case basis it you’re upgrading to Mastercrafted or Grandmaster-level Witcher gear.
Need money? Sell those diamond, ruby, emerald, & sapphire dusts. You don’t need much for crafting. I keep at least 10 of each dust. Sell the rest. Same with runes. I might keep 5/10 of each, sell the rest. I never used them except for the runecraft dude quest/upgrade, but even that’s optional. If you literally loot everything like me, you probably have 1,000 Dwarven Spirits. Sell 900 and profit. Blue and green mutagens are abundant. Sell some of those if needed. Don’t sell red ones...at least not until you max your skills deep into the end of your full play through including both DLCs.
For your skill points, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing on normal or hard. Any build is fine. I like to max quick attack tree, axii to mind control, aard 360, strong back, and food lasts 20 minutes. Otherwise, I don’t spend skill points until I get to a new skill tree option in the Blood & Wine DLC. Some really fun OP options there.
You don’t need to hoard anything. Either sell it or dismantle it. Only thing you might want to keep in your stash box is other Witcher gear if you’ve crafted different schools of gear.

I still need to finish blood and wine...

The school gear leveled up is all you need. Everything else can be sold. Max level with max school gear and you are close to god mode.
At least on normal. Maybe deathmarch keeps you from being over leveled.
Good thing you are playing now. When the game was released they didn't include storage chests.

I had to use ursine gear on death march .
would get 1 shot by everything in anything less.
the crit multiplier on the swords was nice too.
wolf gear was pretty good for normal difficulty.

You will need leather and steel for crafting armor and possibly wood if you craft bolts so its good to keep some of that. The stuff that weighs next to nothing I usually have a lot of.

Derail
Witcher Series (Netflix)
Who is watching?
The story, I believe specifically Season 1, much like the novels takes place before events im the games.
It is very good so far. About to begin Episode 2. Henry Hotstuff really plays good Geralt. We already have lots of tits in the show, comes within 15mins. They aren't wasting time.

Anyone even half-arse looting will pick up enough leather and steel without needing to dismantle anything, unless you’re literally crafting everything. In all my play throughs, never crafted a single non-witcher gear nor bolt. Even on Death March.

I’m thinking about picking this up today. Is it worth it? I tried red dead and was frankly a bit turned off bc it is so immersive and I don’t have to time to spend on it all. Is this game the same way? Or can I play casually and it still be fun?
