101 Swing Thoughts
Posted on 7/25/18 at 11:43 am

I was striking the ball pretty good about a month ago, and scoring well for me. Then I made the mistake of reading too many articles and looking at too many golf videos.
Now, instead of one swing thought when I stand over the ball, I have a myriad of thoughts. And like has happened in the past, instead of my game improving, it's gotten worse.
Has anyone else experienced a worsening golf game or swing after viewing too much instruction?

Then just focus and stick to one

I am so mental with golf it is sick. If playing well, I analyze “why” I was playing well and vice versa . I have found that the more I think about mechanics the worse I play . Sad really

I would work on one thing at a time. I know if I start working on grip, stance, and swing at the same time, it really screws me up. I just focus working on one thing and practice a few times to see if it makes a difference.

That's me. But I have lots of free time at work, and I love golf.

A golfer's worst enemy is his mind. I am the same way as you if I start thinking about mechanics while playing and once I do....it seems almost impossible to switch back during a round.

I play well when I have one swing thought.
However, it its out of my control when that happens. I’m usually like you and just can’t remember how to make contact. Or where my hands go, etc etc etc
So close yet so far.

I'm usually ok until I hit the first bad shot. Then I change a few things or try something I read about or saw on a video, and it goes bad quickly.
Ideally, I'd keep the practicing and experimentation for the range.

This is the right idea, but so hard to do. As soon as make one bad shot I start tinkering knowing I shouldn’t.

This has been working well for me. Try doing all your swing thoughts on a couple of soft warmup swings, then RELAX and use the immediate muscle memory on your real swing.
One of the things I've been working on trying to improve my mental game, and it's working.

I wasn't having any issues until I read this post...
Thanks a-hole!
Just kidding... haha!
I do it like the above poster... Swing thoughts are for practice swings. Real swing is grip it and rip it.

I've actually eliminated the practice swing on standard approach shots. Get the distance, pick the club, pick a target and swing. Has worked pretty well.

Thanks for this tip.
I've been also working on making my grip pressure lighter. Sometimes when I'm aware of the pressure after a swing, I realize that I had a death grip on it. Especially the driver. This is bad business.

Eliminating practice swings did a lot for me once I made that change.

When you play, score is the focus.
When you practice, improving swing mechanics can be worked on.
You are not playing “swing” when you go on the course. You are trying to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as you can.
Practice “swing”, play “golf”

focus on your target out front, make your turn and lift club without swaying, let club drop and turn fast without trying to hit the ball with your hands. the rest is all alignment and trajectory

In honor of Caddy Shack turning 38 today, “be the ball, Danny”

Yep. I figured out “take it away right” was the only one I need
