2024 Member Ball Test Thread - 2nd Updated on my First Post Final Thoughts
Posted on 8/10/24 at 6:40 pm
Posted on 8/10/24 at 6:40 pm
This idea started in the Vice golf ball thread.
The idea was to try balls that may be outside of the norm for you. The ball that I have been playing for a while was the ProV1x, so I will leave it out of my final appraisal.
* My rankings of the balls that I tested are not meant to influence any of you other than if the ProV1x disappeared today, what ball would I turn to for my game.
So here are my Top Four Rankings -
1. Chrome Tour -
IMO this ball falls somewhere between the ProV1 and the ProV1x as far as feel and performance. It is a really good ball performance wise for my swing speed and my usual ball flight. It's a premium priced ball but it checks all the boxes farva lot of players.
2. Maxfli Tour -
2nd update - I played it again yesterday and cane away more impressed after a good driving day.
Great feeling ball, excellent putting ball and the price is right.
3. TM Tour Response -
This ball didn't exactly wow me, but it did one of my playing partners who is a strong player and has switched to it. If I had an argument it would be that it felt too soft than what I am use to. I have to rank it third because it was still a little better off the driver than the Maxfli Tour for me and it beat out the Vice Pro.
In total I tried that balls above plus the Vice Pro models, BRXS, BXS, Maxfli Tour X and the QStar.
Summary -
I have a couple of golf trips planned for this fall and I will be playing the Maxfli Tour.
There is no reason for this thread to end if some of you want to continue to try other balls going forward.
There will be new and updated balls after the PGA Show in February and we can do a 2025 Ball Test if you want.
There were some great reponses and feedback from all of you.

I like this idea.
Do we have to have track man data or can we just suggest golf balls from experience?

Do you guys buy a test sleeve(some shops have 2 ball sleeves) or do you just use near new foundlings to try out?

Whatever works for you as fast a trial.
I rather have your data and experience with the balls than any trackman.
If you play a course regularly, you know where you usually hit it to a spot. Is the new ball longer or shorter. How is it chipping, ballflight, etc..

We all know that the ProV1 models are the Gold Standard, but also the highest priced.
I would use this as a high water mark.
For example, I have never tried the QStar Tour. Can I shoot a good score with the QStar and did I like the way it felt off of my putter and irons.
Did I only give up a couple of yards on my drives , but was still in a good position ?
Things like that.
The key is to have fun and maybe learn about new balls.

I’ve tried this years offerings and still like the 2022 Tour BX. V1X spins to much and the V1 is to soft/doesn’t launch high enough for me. The 22 BX is perfect for me. One hop stop on approaches, long off the Tee, and just enough spin to work with around the greens.
I’m a 3.x index with a 112ish swing speed and spin the ball more than the average guy.

Always fight high spin so I play the left dash. I played the Srixon XV for awhile. Maybe test #s for that one unless anyone has a low spin suggestion.

It's a fine line to lower spin , but not give up other variables.
The AVX is low spin but you can give up a preferred launch angle.
The Srixon QStar Tour and the Bridgestone E6 are lower spin , lower cost options.

I read the Vice thread. I’m interested to see how your group rates the TM Tour Response. I have a low swing speed and it seems to suit my game well. Soft around the greens too. I buy used from lost golf balls . com when they have good sales. But I buy the plain white because they are significantly cheaper than the striped balls.

I tried the Maxfli balls and they are indeed legit as hell.
Incredible value.

I use the Maxfli Tour X and love them. I can buy 4 dozen for $120 tax included at Dicks, you can only buy them at Dicks or Golf Galaxy.
I'm 51, will be 52 Thursday
Driver speed 100
Hcp: 7.9

Today was Taylor Made Speedsoft ink (green)
By feel it seems the dimples are a bit shallower, which would result in less spin. I hit a 53 degree wedge from 102 that landed about 18” past the pin and ended up about 3 feet away. If a ProV1 had landed there, it would have been in or a couple feet short of the flag.
While it has an alignment aid, the design has so much color I don’t think people would like it who use an alignment aid.
One thing that really stood out was putting with it. The greens at The Judge are firm and lightning fast today, the ball really springs off the putter, felt like i didn’t have to swing the putter very hard to get it rolling, which helped get it on line. Had 29 putts hitting 11 greens, really rolled it well inside 10 feet.
Distance wise i couldn’t tell much difference. Maybe a bit shorter.

Excellent review. Doesn't sound like a ball that would make your bag full time.

For a non-urethane option, you really got some spin on it. Your wedges must be around 10k rpm or more!

Not sure, launch monitor I have doesn’t give me spin, although it might and I just don’t know how to get it to show. I do use a groove sharpener so my old wedges stay new so to speak.
I’m pretty good from 75-120 these days. I think that has a lot to do with not changing them out.

I tried the Vice Pro Plus this weekend and just didn’t like them. I’ve tried Vice in the past and figured I’d give them another shot but just not for me.
Ball flight was incredibly high. I already hit it high and these were just ballooning up on me. Maybe players with lower flight would enjoy them. Green side they felt “sticky” and didn’t release much. Not necessarily negative it was just not expected. Not sure if that was the condition of the greens or balls but when I switched away from Vice I didn’t have that same experience.
I played the Maxfli tour for about a month and enjoyed them. I’d put maxfli well above Vice personally.

I think Maxfli may be the best bang for the buck of the urethane cover golf balls.
I’m stilll playing TM tour soft, but I’m going to try Srixon Q star tour soonish
