Will be in Chicago/Milwaukee area next week. Just seeing if anyone has any experience playing courses in that area. Any information or recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Lawsonia Links. It’s probably too late to get on Erin Hills on such short notice

Thanks man, Will definitely check that out

Shore Acres would be amazing. Do not like my chances of being able to get a tee time there. Worth a shot though. Just trying to decide renting clubs or going with ship sticks or something like that. Appreciate the recommendation man.

Harborside International in Chicago is very nice from what I remember.

Milwaukee has some great golf, lived there for a year. Would recommend Brown Deer as a good option. This is where Tiger made his first professional start, and former host site of the MKE open.
All the municipal courses in MKE are bent grass, saucey as shite, make you wish you lived in the north.

Yep, I actually hate playing on Bentgrass because it pisses me off having to go back home to play Bermuda.

Blackwolf Run is awesome, like it better than Whistling Straits up at Kohler. Erin Hills is pretty ans scenic in the fall.
Cog Hill #4 is a good standby in Chicago.

I'm pretty new to Chicago but have played a few rounds. There's some really good public golf around here, but almost everything is a 30 min-1hr drive from the center of the city. A lot of good courses between Milwaukee and Chicago. I haven't played all of these, but they are consensus top courses in their respective direction.
North of Chicago
Thunderhawk--Supposed to be one of the best public courses in Chicagoland, especially for the value--$50-100. It's midway between Milwaukee and Chicago.
Steeplechase--Good course that is cheaper than Thunderhawk--$50-80. Supposedly the best value in Chicagoland. Also midway between Milwaukee and Chicago.
The Glen Club--Great semi-private course. I've heard it's the best course in the area that you can get on, and I can see why. Played it recently and it was a lot of fun, but expensive--$120-220. It's 25-45 minutes from downtown Chicago depending on traffic.
Stonewall Orchard--Good course but pretty far out, NW. It's supposedly one of the toughest in the area. $80-140.
Sunset Valley--In one of the nicest/most expensive suburbs. Worth going to just to see the northshore neighborhoods and stop by a beach on Lake Michigan. Supposed to be one of the best values close(ish) to the city. $50-80
West
Cantigny Golf--3 9 holes; all are supposed to be very good and unique from one another. Best public course in the west suburbs. $80-140/18 holes.
Highlands of Elgin--Good value. $50-85/round.
Cog Hill--4 courses. Only Dusbdread and Ravines are worth playing from what I'm told. Dusbdread (hosted PGA) is probably the toughest public course in the area, and one of the most expensive too--$145-200 . I played the Ravines in March. It was a really good value ($50-75) with tons of elevation change.
South
I've heard Harborside used to be the best in this area, but it's gone downhill recently. However, it's the closest of all of the courses on this list, and it's the only one that would be uber-able. If you have a car, skip the south. If you don't, Harborside will still probably be a fun time. Great views of the city skyline. $50-140

LSU guy who lives out here (Chicago) cog hill dubs is the best Public course in the state! It’s about 20 miles from downtown. Shoreacres is insanely private but stellar!

This is a good rundown. That sucks about Harborside - that place was really nice ~5 years ago.
Cog Hill Dubsdread and Cantigny are probably my two favorites. Dubsdread legit might be one of my favorite courses anywhere, public or private. Insanely fun layout and course while being challenging as hell. Cog Hill #2 is really solid as well.
Glen Club hosts a big Korn Ferry event. Saw Scottie Scheffler win in a playoff there some years back. Very well-conditioned, and it's one of the courses (of several) that Northwestern plays at.
For the Southside, Ravisloe is a cool old course that was a private club until a few years ago, got bought by someone (a doctor, I think?), and turned it public. Old-school short-ish Donald Ross with a lot of fun holes.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the recommendations and the detailed break down. It was a big help. Were not able to get tee times for some of the courses recommended unfortunately. We ended up playing Harborside (Starboard course), Thunderhawk and South Shore. Great spots. All three with different types of layouts which nice. Whoever said Harborside's cart path needed some work was right. It was rough but the course was in great condition.

I'm playing Starboard in 2 weeks with some guys, we're coming up from Atlanta. I used to live in Chi and played Harborside countless times, always was in great shape.
Was it windy AF at Harborside?

Good God it was windy AF!!!!! Gusts of of 45 mph and consistently 20. Needless to say the golf game sucked but that would have probably been the case anyway. Other than that it was an awesome time. The course was in great shape. Would like to have played the Port course but was not available that day.

Somehow that course has a ton of wind, no matter what. You probably played in the afternoon, in the morning it's not as bad but you still have the wind.
I was hoping to play Port as well but they are having a tournament that day so we're stuck with Starboard.

My MIL is in a womens league that rotates through the MKE munis weekly. I would join them occasionally and grab the first slot after their group. I had some great times whooping it up with them and the courses are really good for what they cost. ETA The Chicago muni scene is a disaster but I lived right by sydney marovitz and would randomly catch it perfect at like 6pm
