What’s the most you’ve ever cut an iron shaft down and did it affect it much?

I bought an iron shaft that’s a tad long

I cut a 1/2 inch from an old 3 iron i used to have in the bag and it so now change... I've cut 3 inches from a 13 degree 3 wood before and it felt the same and was a shade easier to hit... hope that helped a little

No possible way you took 3” off of any club and had it feel the same. Swing weight would be extremely lighter.

I believe it is 1 sw point per 1/2” in either direction. So an iron at D3SW woul feel lighter at D2 after 1/2” trim.

Probably not notiyto lost golfers. But 3”? Doubtful

That is pretty accurate.

I don't know that I've ever cut an iron shaft. I've cut a putter shaft, but when you're doing that, you expect the change in weight.

My questions, off the top of my head -- did you buy the same iron shaft to match your set? How'd you buy it too long? If you bought a 6 iron shaft and are trying to reshaft the 7 iron, if you cut the shaft, I think it'll change the stiffness profile so that it won't match the rest of the set.

If you're talking you bought a plus 1" iron set and you want to cut an inch off the entire set, they will all match but it'll still change the stiffness profile. It's also going to impact lie angle, which could be a bigger issue.

In short, a six iron shaft cut to seven iron length isn't the same as a seven iron shaft.

I bought a matching brand to the rest of the set… it’s a flex weaker but about 10 grams heavier and about an inch and a half too long. Had a brain fart ordering it. It’s going into a single length head, so not worried about swing weight.

More curious on characteristic changes if I take 3/8 off the tip and then an 1 1.8 off the butt.

From wha I gathered off forums, it’s doable.

Good news is I only spent $9 on the shaft so no biggie if I mess it up

I would tip it an inch and cut to length off the butt.

Is it a tapered tip or parallel? If it's tapered, you dont want to trim too much.

Cant answer the playing characteristics though... but hell, if you're only out $9, chop that bitch up!

I have no idea why you’re getting downvoted, but you’re 100% correct.

1/2" cut is not going to effect it too much, anything more than that you start getting different playing characteristics. Cutting at the tip is going to effect it a lot more than the butt as well, specifically the kick point and flex.

In general, the more you cut it down, the stiffer it's going to play. Also, the swing weight changes obviously like Mizunodude said.

Discrete length shafts, where the iron shafts come shorter in lengths as you go higher up in club number, are in most cases also tapered tip (0.355"). These shafts are pre-trimmed at the tip but NOT at the butt end. The expectation is that your club-builder will trim the butt to achieve the desired final club length. For many standard length clubs, you will need to trim somewhere between 1/2" to 1".

Appreciate all the feedback. This will go in to a Cobra one 5 iron so got swing weight points to lose.

I bought a PX High Launch in 5.0 while the rest of my clubs are 5.5. The HL allegedly plays around 5.2 or 5.3 but I don’t have a cpm measuring device. The shaft is 38” long taper tip and I can probably tip it 0.5 to 0.75 and butt cut the rest.

Trying to figure out whether or not it would retain its “high launch” better to leave tip alone and just butt cut. I feel like tipping it will affect flight more than butt cut

ETA: my long game has never been stellar, hence this experiment. Really just trying to hit this club down range somewhere

I did also switch grips on the club at the same time...Went from a jumbo grip back to a normal grip, that would have had an equalizing affect on the swing weight no?

Keep in mind, there are hosel weights that you can get from golfworks to help get the right swing weight if too light.

It’s a single length, so it plays at 7i head weight. I’ll be cutting it down to probably 37.25 length.

I’ve decided not to mess with the tip. I don’t want it too stiff. Might mess with it tomorrow while stuck inside
