Does anyone here pay for the premium 18 birdies app?

I use the free app to track my scores and sometimes to get distances or look at a hole layout. It’s a really nice app. It keeps stats for you and all of that stuff, I started to really like it.

I’m not really sure what the advantage is of buying the premium version so I’m trying to find out if anybody has and if it’s worth it?

what do you like about the premium that you can’t use with the free version?

If you have time you can track shots, and it builds your average distance over time that you can look at. I don’t track every shot. I track good shots to get a better reading.

It also takes elevation and wind (assume they get this from a local weather station?) into consideration to give you a “plays like” yardage and recommends a club based on the yardage bank that you’ve been building.

They have some other stuff that I haven’t looked into to be honest. There’s an AI coach that I’m going to check out one day.

The only real advantage I can see is the "plays like" feature but I honestly just don't like going to me phone between most shots, after each hole, etc.

A decent rangefinder will have slope and while wind plays a factor, I think most golfers who would adjust for a wind difference of 5mph can probably make the same decision without the app telling them to do so.

The only time I use the free version is when I'm solo and walking.

Playing golf with someone who's eyes are continually fixated on their phone is pretty annoying to me.

No, and nothing is worse than a guy waiting on his app to refresh before he takes a shot slowing the whole course down. Usually these are very high handicap guys as well. Bad and slow

The dramatic drop in handicaps w/ everyone I've play a round with recently just by downloading the app almost has me wanting to burn the 100 bucks to be come a scratch golfer....

**Disclaimer** This was all extreme sarcasm...

Yea no doubt. I pretty much use it as a scorecard, when you entree your score it asks basic stat questions, FIR, GIR, chips, putts, OB etc…

Good way to quickly track stats and keep score. Not sure how accurate it’s handicap system is because it has me at a 5

Again, a bad player slowing the course down. Do that shite when you get home.

It takes me about 5 seconds to enter this info and it would probably be slower if I manually kept score on a scorecard. I do it as I walk to the next hole and it takes no time at all.

When you're walking, thats different from when you're in a cart where almost everyone leaves their phone. The vast majority of people I see doing this sit at their cart before pulling to the next hole and enters all their stats. There's no question this slows the pace down. It's not even a debate.

Say what you want, but it burns my arse when there is a slow group in front, and there’s always one guy standing in the fairway, staring at phone, for what seems like an eternity. No club in hand, then proceeds (after his phone updates) to take multiple practice swings from his GolfTec coach, just to hit the ball about 80 yards and do the whole process all over again.

I play a ton of golf and have literally never seen anything like this before. Guess you get unlucky.

I use the free version. Mostly for yardages.

I have a phone clip that straps to the post of the golf cart. After a drive, I drive the cart close to the ball and the app gives me distances to the green, distances to carry bunkers, etc. I don't use it for every shot, mostly before a tee shot and before an approach shot.

When I finish a hole I enter my score as I pull up to the next tee. I never take the phone out of its cradle.

Just as some say its annoying to play behind a person with a phone- its just as annoying to me watching a guy in the middle of the fairway pulling out a range finder, shooting the flag, shooting the bunkers, then zipping it back up in his cart and pulling a club.

There's no doubt in my mind the method I use is quicker than that, but to each his own.

I use the free version also. It's my go to app for courses I'm not familiar with. I use it to see the hole layout, hidden hazards, get yardages etc. Never really found a need for the premium version.

Now for courses I'm familiar with I don't even see the need for using the free version lol. I'm not in to all the stat tracking though.

Yes. I've liked it. I use it in conjunction with my smartwatch so I don't have to check the phone

Lol what? Do you ever keep these stats on your scorecard? It’s faster on the app than the scorecard, it literally takes 5 seconds

I think this is more of an indictment of the people at your course rather than the app.

A remotely competent person using the app is faster than whipping out a range finder and ranging bunkers, flag, front and back of green.

Source: I use the app and get paired with guys with rangefinders more times than not when I play alone. I’m faster than them.

I mean you hit a drive and take off. Get to ball, takes 5 seconds for the gps to pinpoint you, hit track shot to log driver distance, takes 2 seconds, then another 10 to get an estimate within 5 yards of the pin. Grab a club, line up, and go.

Takes another 10 seconds to log stats when you get to the tee box.

Unless you’re Rainman and keep your stats in your head, the app is superior.

These people you’re bitching about would probably be slow no matter what.
