Maybe we overate the course just a tad? I feel like I see so many posts of “a scratch golfer wouldn’t shoot 100”

Obviously playing at the members tees matters a lot, but still.

Wonder if they had the greens rolling as fast. I doubt it.

Respectable round. The greens couldn’t have changed much in less than 24 hours, right? Those greens are brutal and would add many strokes.

I’m sure they watered the greens and didn’t roll them etc etc but not sure how much change can be made in 24 hrs

But he basically shot almost exactly what is expected of his handicap

The members tees are not nearly as difficult.

Member Tees 6365 yards
Masters Tees 7445 yards

Huge difference.

But the green complexes would baffle the average golfer.

Of course

But it was stated an 18 wouldn’t break 175 and a scratch wouldn’t break 100 on multiple channels. That was the metrics used and retweeted and talked about

I think that’s clearly just way out there

If we are to believe the Slope rating that I can find, the member's tees is a 137

the only courses I've played in that range is Camp Creek in 30a and River oaks country club. Camp Creek destroyed me but I've played ROCC a few times and i don't find it that insanely hard. The caddy at ROCC does a lot of heavy lifting for you

I’ve been to Augusta. Never obviously played it

Tee to green it would be a very comfortable course to play. Obviously the greens are extremely difficult but as a mid handicap golfer it’s tight tee shots and out of bounds that wrecks me and that’s the opposite of what it is

There are “easy” courses on paper that play hard for me

Friend of mine is +2 and was an SEC walk on golfer.. He mentioned getting to play Augusta in college and shot a 76. I didn't ask what tees he played, but even assuming its member tees, I think you have a good point.

Augusta member tees are less than 6500 yards. Course is not hard from that distance. Greens are still very tricky but if you have a caddy, any sub 7 handicap is likely shooting +/- 3-4 shots of their handicap. Unsure if they have a caddy or forecaddie but that is an enormous assist.

I have to believe you are forced to use a club caddy. Even Harbour Town makes you use a caddy

Funny to think when Tiger first won it it was at 6900 yards

That's where Camp Creek got me. I was in the native area all the time

been to Augusta as well, I have zero experience hitting off that many uneven lies. That alone is going to add several strokes

Off the tee, I think I could play Augusta well. Everything after that would be a nightmare

true but the equipment was a lot different in 1997. 300 yard drives were long for Tour pros back then

Tee to green includes the green. How many approach shots from an average/shite golfer have enough spin to hold those greens rolling as fast as they are. Masters winners always lead or are near the top in SG approach because it’s so important to hit greens as it’s extremely difficult to get up in down and make putts. It’s what made Rose’s rounds so impressive. He didn’t hit the ball very well at all this year. His putting and scrambling was at the top IIRC.

ETA: a mid handicapper may not lose a ball but it could take them 5-7 shots just to get the ball on the green and to stay. How many side/down hill lies or blocked shots will they have?

Have to believe a 25 handicap is going to chunk/blade a few chip shots and with 3-5 putt every hole out there. I call BS on him shooting a 103 unless he’s not really a 25 handicap.

I have been fortunate enough to play it 3 times. The last being in 2023. I hover around scratch, depending on the amount I'm playing. I have carded 85, 81, and 88 in those 3 trips. Members tees, tee to green, is not that difficult if you stay out of the sand and water. As mentioned, it's the greens that get you

I have a friend who has worked the The Masters for 14 years and gets to play in May. He’s an 18 hdcp and he has broken 100 from members tees. PROBABLY had gimmies and drops, but I do not know. A screen shot of a 2023 scorecard shows the member yardage at 6250. Playable yardage, but when you add in the greens and the elevations … probably a very tough course for weekend warriors.

JJ also claimed to have shot a 117 at Erin Hills the day after the US Open back in 2017. He’s probably a lot better than a 25.

ETA: he claimed to be a 21 back then
