New golf clubs

I am looking to get new clubs. I am currently hitting a Wilson starter set my parents got me when I was 16, which is almost 20 years ago now. I typically shoot in the low 100’s, to upper 90’s on my best day. I play about 20 rounds a year, give or take. I am wondering what are the best bang for my buck clubs and is it worth getting fitted.
TIA
TIA

I got the Srixon ZX5 and really like them, my buddy has the new Takomo 101 and I hit them the other day and was pleasantly surprised for the price

Edwin Watts, go buy some guys old clubs. Some guys get clubs every 1-2 years, and sell there "old" sets. Play something a step above a starter set before getting fitted. If you are a strong guy with good speed, go with steel shaft. Other than that the fitting will be a waste of money at this stage of your career. Also a garunteed drop in score when you run out there with a set in the bag, the confidence is key.

If you are playing that much golf, I'd get fitted. They can likely put you in something that will make the game that much more enjoyable for you, the tech compared to 20 years ago its way more player friendly.

You need to hit the Callaway elyte irons. I want to do a thread on these but I haven’t had a chance yet. They really are incredible. I have the core model but they have they have the x and HL models to fit your game as well.

Since your a high handicap player, this is what i recommend. If you want new irons, Takomo 101's, cheap but very good, if not, go to Edwin Watts and buy a used set of player improvement irons, Taylormade Qi, stealth. Callaway Elite, Paradym, Srixon ZX4, something along those lines. A(gap)wedge- 6 after that use either hybrids 4-5 or fairway woods 7-9. Use a strong 5 wood, you don't need a 3 wood. You can still buy a brand new Taylormade Sim2max for $299, it's a great club and it's new, used buy anything that is a couple years old and in good shape. Buy new sand and lob wedges, you don't want those to be used, the grooves get worn out. If I were you, I'd buy the Cleveland Smart Sole full face wedges. They will be easier for you to hit, the sole of the clubs are wide and will help you not dig into the ground with the leading edge. If you want to spend some money on a club, buy a LAB putter, I have the DF3, it's expensive $450 but it's the best money I've spent on a club in years, you can find used ones a little cheaper.
You don't need to get fitted yet, you don't make contact with the ball good enough for the fitter to find something worth spending big money on. Spend the money on lessons and then practice. Once you start shooting in the mid 80's regularly, then think about getting fitted for a custom set of clubs.

Edwin Watts, go buy some guys old clubs
Did this in college... Some guy bought the set new, swung em, didn’t like em, and returned. Not a scratch on them and I paid a quarter of the price. Carrying the same set of Ping Irons in my bag today. Get something you can hit with confidence, and good enough quality to hand down to your kid or nephew.

If you want to save money you can find really good deals on eBay.
Make sure you get the correct shaft. Length, flex, feel. Any modern club face will get the job done. If you prefer more forgiveness and distance get the game improvement model. If you like the look and feel of a smaller head go with the players irons or combo sets. But your better off going to a local shop and trying something out.

If you been playing for 20yrs and if your ball striking is consistent it’s definitely worth paying for a fitting. Spend the $100 on a fitting to get an idea of what you need and then find a used set with the same specs online. You can get an older version of the current line up for cheap.. probably around $500 for a set of irons that are 3-4 years old.

No new clubs - invest $1500 in weekly lessons with the best coach you can find - then have the coach recommend a set for you then buy a year old set in the same model - used - and thank me later - I’m serious - if people invested money in lessons rather than new clubs - they will be exponentially better off in 12 months - then buy new clubs your coach suggests - works every single time - your new range will be 85-90 at worst and you will have a new love for the game
Good luck :)
Good luck :)
