Pebble/Spyglass/Spanish Bay/The Hay Review

I just returned from Pebble Beach. We stayed at the Pebble Beach Lodge and played Spyglass, Pebble, Spanish Bay and The Hay in that order.
Pebble Lodge- awesome facility with several very good restaurants. We ate at The Tap Room after some drinks at The Bench. Tap Rooms steaks were very good and it was a great atmosphere. We really liked The Bench for drinks before- outdoor seating area, pizza oven, great selection- cool spot.
Spyglass- I flew in earlier in the day and we played Spyglass around 3:10 (last tee time of the day). Quite a way to start the trip off. It was a beautiful course, and obviously in very good shape. Really good practice facility. We had two younger caddies who drove carts as we walked. They were knowledgeable of the course and did a nice job. The first six to seven holes were along the coast and were incredible. It is crazy how small some of the greens are. Great course.
Pebble- we heard some caddies say Spyglass is the best "golf course" of the three, but don't be mistaken. Pebble is the show. The entire course is breathtaking. When you are playing that course you have some more pep in your step. It was an extremely fun course to play, and it felt like it flew by. Just a great experience. We had a caddie who had been there for 27 years, and he was awesome. Good stories, and knew the greens incredibly well. If I went back, I would probably play Pebble twice.
Spanish Bay- really cool course, great facility, and I think the hardest of the three. There are a lot of waste areas, and some of the fairways are small. A caddy mentioned they were considering redesigning. It was a great course, especially around the ocean, but would come in behind Spyglass and Pebble. Stix after was awesome to watch the end of the PGA and listen to the bagpiper.
Caddies a must at all three- greens are very hard to read. They saw things we would never see.
The Hay- This is the pitch and putt they redesigned and it was a ton of fun. Great spot for post round gambling, drinks and Mexican food. I would play this once a day if I did it again.
Other restaurants:
Roy's (Spanish Bay)- very good seafood chain. We enjoyed it.
Stillwater (Pebble Lodge)- ate breakfast here every day. Good salmon avocado toast.
Overall an incredible trip. Probably spend around $4,700 per person with golf, food and drinks (more with gear purchases. I will try to post pictures.

How much ahead-of-time did you make reservations?

Awesome write up and glad that you enjoyed the trip.
I played Pebble over 20 years ago, I can't believe how expensive that has become.

Great trip. Cypress is next time, I’m guessing?

We could see it from the course- that is as close as we are getting!

Awesome round up! Thanks. I’m trying to plan a trip now and hoping to go in September.

Cypress Point is very tough to get on.

I lived there in 1998-2000. If I win the lottery I’ll be back there asap. I played Poppy Hills more than anywhere because of the NCGA membership. I think it was like $35-40 or something crazy like that. Also played Bayonet/blackhorse quite a bit and had friends that could get me on Carmel Valley Ranch and Quail Lodge. Spanish is my favorite course ever and Spyglass (where one of my best friends was a caddy for decades) is the hardest course I’ve ever played. Pebble Beach is simply a treasure to behold. A couple of the inland holes aren’t super memorable but once you breathe in the Carmel Beach air and see those whitecaps it is heavenly.

Cypress is one of my dream courses. That par 3! Got to the the scariest shot ever.

Just did that trip recently. Didn’t play Spanish but did the others. We screwed up and did not have a caddie for Spy Glass and it effed me up bad. There’s putts that I was certain were up hill right to left breakers and it did the exact opposite. They told us the same thing about Spy vs Pebble but for us it was Pebble no contest. Nice write up

Naw, Cypress Point is one of the most exclusive golf clubs on the planet. It’s in the same tier as Augusta. Place is as elite as it gets.
It’s impossible to get on there.
Course is incredible tho, check out some rounds on Youtube with people playing it. It has a unique layout. Had back to back par 5s and I believe back to back par 3s.

That 16 hole is insane.

I was lucky to get on Cypress Point 20 years ago. Still my favorite course ever. Parred #16 with driver off the tee. It hit the green, rolled into back bunker, got up-and-down. I have a pic of me teeing off that hole with my titleist 975D driver.
