PXG Gen 6 review

As promised.
I want to do this one a little different because I think that my vitals and hcp are important and may vary from anyone interested in these clubs.
I am 67, 6'4" and 227. I tend to be barrel chested and if I get lazy I fight swinging the club around myself instead of a correct plane. No matter what the irons, I hit my iron shots very high.
I have had numerous surgeries to my spine, knees and broken bones. With that said, I still feel very athletic today and my current hcp is 7.5 posted on GHIN. Because of a wrist tumor several years ago, I find that I play better and I am more confident taking a divot with graphite shafts.
Testing - Before I purchased the new Gen 6 0311P irons I did a fitting at PXG Store. Really good and compressive fitting for 50 bucks, well worth it even if you don't buy.
I also did some range sessions with the Ping I230's, Srixon X5's and TM 790 irons. All great clubs in their own way. Happy to discuss or rank them if needed.
The Club Specs -
Gen 6 0311P irons, 1/2 inch long with the MMT Graphite metal mesh shafts, these shafts have a lot of the properties of the steel fiber shafts, but a smoother feel in my opinion. These shafts are no upcharge.
The irons are forged with a polymer insert. I will say that I haven't experienced any hotspots with these irons or my Gen 4 irons.
First thing right off is the fact that the Gen 6 provides more feedback than my Gen 4 irons did because of the thinner face. Flush hits are buttery smooth and the ball soars.
The accuracy is the best that I have experienced in a long time, these irons just want to go straight, even on mishits. For me the top line is fine, of course it is something that I have never given a thought to since I played Pings for 30 years.
As far as the sole, when you look at them there is nothing dramatic about the sole, but it club really cuts through the turf with ease and no restrictions.
You can do a search on Plugged in Golf reviews on the Gen 6 and the writer also comments on the soles performance through different lies.
Distance -
This is always so subjective. In my group we tend to play tee boxes that range from 6600-6700 yds now, so I am not really concerned so much with distance. I value accuracy over everything.
What I can say is that because of my recent spine issues I "try" to swing about 90% and I want my 7 iron to carry 165 normal and about 170 if I step on it .
Summary -
For me, these are are very forgiving and accuracy is the huge benefit. They are as long or longer as anything else that I have owned or hit recently.
forget what you think about PXG commercials etc.. We shouldn't make golf any harder than it is. the PXG trackman Fitting is a great experience, great tool and well worth it, plus it goes towards any purchase.
PXG also has a 90 day guarantee with any purchase.

For grins, I found this picture from 20 years ago at Cypresswood (disposable camera shot)

That is really good. You’ve maintained good speed in spite of major ortho issues. You must work on flexibility consistently.
With a 7 iron currently, I’d say 135 for me and 140 IF I get a gust. I could hit cart path and go 200 though. It seems to carry further moving toward a hazard. My ball speed increases exponentially if ball is headed to a white, red, or yellow stake.
Strangely, I’ve made 2 hole in ones with 7 irons. 1994 and 2021. The loft on the 1994 7 was more than the 2021 7 iron. Distance in 1994 was 160. 2021 was 142.
I guess I need them to deloft mine even more.
Did you use standard PXG grips?

Despite the age difference, we’re very similar ortho issues and all.

Great review bopper

Brother, My aches hurt lol
I may be the only guy you will know that broke his neck playing golf and I also hit a cow going 50 on a motorcycle that snapped my left leg like a twig....

For some reason, I thought football had wrecked your back.
It’s amazing you still play golf, and are single digit!
I know some people hate PXG, but I have been pleased with their products and pricing.
Have you tested their new golf ball?

Football wreaked my knees for sure.
But I think pro softball and golf did the back in.
I tried the PXG ball yesterday, initial thought is that it is firmer than the AVX that I currently play. More ProV1 than ProV1x, I believe.
Other than that, I need to play around with it more to give independent thoughts.
Can't beat the price.

At $40 a dozen, it’s worth a try.
I’ve been trying TM Tour response.
The spin is good. I like the lower compression.

Received 2 dozen from Plugged in Golf. It's our new "official golf ball" for reviews.
Personally, not my cup of tea. They only come in one model. I find them very firm.
FWIW, I passed out some samples to my golf buddies, and of the 5, only one liked them.
I tend to like softer golf balls. TP5, Maxfli Tour, Vice Pro.

Enjoyed the review Bopper. I've heard good stuff about their wedges. Saw one in your bag pic. Are they as good as advertised?

Well these are currently in my bag ... So yeah I'd like to hear your thoughts on them... Mainly b/c I passed on getting a new set of PXG's for them.. I had the Gen 1 0311's for a long time and ten got the i230's

Absolutely.
Lots of models tend to lose direction on a mishit or create too much spin which exaggerates a draw or a fade.

You got a good set there.
I will always respect Ping as a Company and their innovations. I played Pings almost exclusive for 30 years (every model until the G425's).
If I have a complaint about the recent Ping irons is that they all look alike at address to me, which really shouldn't matter.
Two things prevented me from buying the I230's -
1. With my tender back, I just cant go pound range balls like I use too and the irons deserve that attention to dial in. And I don't try the work the ball as much as I use to.
2. Ping doesn't offer the MMT shaft that really fits me to a "T" at this stage. Ping offers a good selection of steel shafts, but not on high quality stable graphite shafts.
Like I said, you have a good set there, spend the time with them and they should treat you right.
