I know the player is the ultimate call on his shots but par 5, you are 6 under for the day and you hit driver into the woods again. Take an iron the worst you gonna do is par. Drive for show, putt for dough.

Stats prove this isn’t remotely true anymore.

I have another idea. Just don’t hit it in the woods. You aren’t trying for par on a par 5, not where he was trailing. This is a dumb comment.

Sam had to play aggressive to post a number. Nobody is taking iron off the tee on par 5s. That’s a sure fire way to never have any success on the modern tour.

You don’t win when you’re behind by playing for par.

Especially when you have a good round going, you step on the gas.

If Same pars 8 and 17 on Thursday, he will by 3 shots. He had 16 par 5's, all reachable or at least close in two shots. He played the par 5's even par for the tournament. That is awful for a pro golfer in the top 50 in the world. He needs to get a grip on finding a way to drive the ball in the fairway like his buddy Sheffler. If he does, he will become a top 5 player in the world.

You obviosly know Jack shite about golf. You're probably one of those that turns in a 50 in a 4 man scramble and can't break 90 on your own ball.

Blame the caddie. LOL. I don’t even know where to start with this one.

He's trailing, and comes to a hole that you have to birdie to have a shot, and you want him to play it safe? Come on man.

They’ve got reams of data which say hit it as far as possible unless there are penalty areas in reasonable reach.

Hitting less than driver over the course of a season will have some of these guys folding shirts and giving lessons instead of playing for big checks.

Golf is a fickle mistress. Some days she loves you, someday she pees in your Corn Flakes. The Caddie doesn't swing the club

As the late, great Dave Marr said, "Two things in life don't last: dogs chasing cars and pros putting for pars".

No one with Sam's talent is hitting an iron off the tee on a par-5 when he's behind.

I'm not saying hit irons, but a fricking 3 wood with more accuracy will do the job. Bogeying a par 5 on the tour is like a double bogey or worse for us hackers. And I'm one of em. My driver is all over the place, and on short par 4's, I hit 2 iron cause I know that I can at least get it in the fairway, most of the time.

In general, pros and laymen actually have a similar dispersion on driver and 3 wood.

Only IF there is a penalty area near the line of play should a PGA Tour professional opt to hit any club other than driver.

Burns missed a shot. It happens. Over the course of a season, hitting driver unless absolutely contraindicated will result in lower average score.

IF you can hit a 2 iron, you might benefit from working with a teaching pro on your driver. A modern driver- for most players from 15 handicap to touring pro- is much easier to swing than a 2 iron.

I’m jealous. A 2 iron for me would be just for punch out from trees. You must have a lot of clubhead speed. I’d almost bet that a good teaching pro could have you smashing drives in one one hour session.

That's an oversimplification. Fairways are the goal off the tee. These guys want to spin their irons/wedges. And on some holes positioning is key.

But i agree in general the consensus is to bomb it. I dont love analytics in golf. Hitting good shots is about feel, not math. But its gaining a lot of momentum on tour. All the aim point putting stuff was really popular. I can buy into the math more with putting than with full shots.

I’m not an expert, and every golfer knows their own game better than anyone else, but articles like this made me reconsider some choices.

I offer this for consideration and not as the gospel.
A golfer has to be confident with his choice so many good players might make different decisions, but Sam Burns missing a fairway with a driver does not mean I need to swing more 3 woods. I suck and I bet my 3 wood is no more reliable than my driver.
