What irons should I buy?

Looking for a new set of irons. Little background info. I’m now 53. In my early 20’s I was about a 2 handicap playing ping eye 2 black dot. Still playing those irons. Clearly old technology and with age I’ve lost distance probably play to a 10-12 now. What new irons might I look at and where would you buy them? Should I get custom fitted? Have not bought anything like this in years except for a driver. Willing to spend what it costs but don’t want to be oversold. Advice?

I'd definitely get fitted just because you have such a drastic change to your swing compared to 30 years ago. Lots of local guys on the board can recommend a fitter.

Like many here I was fitted by Buddha at Bebu Golf on the West Bank. It was an excellent experience. He could easily have oversold me but did not. I can't recommend him enough

Calloway Rogue X graphite will get your distance back. I tried many and those worked best for me in a similar situation.

Get fitted and take the time to hit a lot of options between the head and shaft before deciding.

Buddha took my dad from Ping Eye 2s, Black Dot to P790s 2* upright. It's worth getting fitted, considering you haven't spent money on clubs in what essentially amounts to my entire lifetime.

Don’t be afraid of graphite shafts is my only advice. Spend the money on a decent set. At 53, retirement ain’t too far away. Enjoy it!

My next set will be the Maltby TS1 forged irons through Golfworks. Best club for the price. Have 3 different buddies (all scratch/+) I play alot with that have went to them and they feel and look great.
I need to get a few more seasons out of my Ping i200s that I dropped way too much money on 1st.
Check them out and let me know what you think

I second the advice about graphite shafts. Picked up some distance, and easier on my joints.

Interesting, They are 50 bucks a head, then say a KBS Tour Shaft at 45 bucks and a GP Multi Compound grip at 12 bucks.
Your a little over a 100 bucks a club with steel shafts if you can build them yourself.
In line price wise with a set of Sub70 or New Level irons that are built to order.
I have never tried a Maltby product before, but they look nice.

I just went through a long fitting and came down to a set of Ping i500, Titleist T100s, and Mizuno MP-20 HMB. I ended up going with the Mizuno's and they have been so much fun to play with. They have a much better feel than the Ping or Titleist sets. Put a 105g Nippon steel stiff shaft in them.

It helps that we all live close to Golfworks and play a lot with the guy in charge. 4-G came in right at $450 with his discount

Those are the irons I play. Bebu fit me for them. The best irons I’ve ever hit.
So I disagree with your statement. Even YouTube people say the feel is amazing.
Got them over the TM P790 (ball flight wasn’t what I wanted)
