and why?
I've been playing about 4-5 years, and I'm lucky to break 100, I have about a 27 handicap. Different parts of my game flop back and forth from being okay to horrible, but for a while now my longer irons 5i & 4i have been pretty horrible with me mostly chilly dipping everything. Absolutely kills my game on par 5s, because I don't get much distance on my second shot. I'm have 3W 15º and a 3hy 24º. Lately I've been hitting my hybrid much better (about 180 yards) than my 3W (very erratic both topping it and chilly dipping), , so I'm leaning towards getting a 2hy around 20º rather than a 5W of about the same loft, but it seems most people I play with utilize woods more than hybrids.

Just curious on what the board uses and why?

I'm like a 17 HCP. Long irons are tough for me too. I have a 6, 5 and 3 hybrid that I use instead of any long irons.

I dropped a 4i from my bag. I do carry a 5i but primarily use it for long , low punch shots. I have two hybrids…. One that can take me 180-190 and the other that takes me 190-210. Anything more than that and I’m 3w off the deck.

I know it is hard to do, but consider breaking up these longer shots into two smaller shots. You’ll stay out of danger more and my find statistically you are providing yourself more par and bogey opportunities

Im a 5 handicap
3W, 5W, 4h which would be a 7W if I were buying a new one right now. 5i is my longest iron.

Im not a great iron player, but can smash a fairway wood. Everyone is different. There was a time where I was playing all hybrids and no fairway woods.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but try getting a few lessons from a , local pro before you go buy anything. It will save you money in the long run and make the game more enjoyable.

ETA My 3W is a 4W. M2 3wHL 16.5*

I have a Taylormade Rocketballz 3w that I love. One hybrid, a Callaway 19deg that is my 225yd club and that's it. The rest are irons with a 2i being the lowest. In an age where you see a 5i being the lowest in most bags, I enjoy hitting long irons.

Oddly enough, if I NEED to hit a fairway the 2i is my go to. It all comes down to your confidence in the clubs in your bag. Find which clubs give you that. And at a 27 handi, you're probably still searching for that. It takes lessons and time on the range IMO. Good luck.

Solid point, and to that point I definitely do not have any confidence in my long irons right now.

Great advice for sure. I took one lesson last year, felt my irons improved for several rounds then just fell off a cliff. I probably will have to look into booking another session(s).

-12 HC

I play a 4 iron 210-220
18 degree Hybrid 220-240
3W 240+

If you struggle with long irons I would look at 7Ws and hybrids as a replacement. They are very forgiving and the weight really helps keeping club speed up through impact on miss hits.

9hcp (13 for scrambles) longest iron is 5. I use a 4 hybrid then Heavenwood which I find easy to launch. I would lose that 4iron if I were you.

4 wood and 7 wood here.

Finally figured out that hybrids just aren't for me.

Kudos to you if you can hit a 4-iron 220 yards.

I have a driver, 4W, 4h, 5-9 iron/woods from Tour Edge and 4 wedges plus a putter. I am a 12hdcp. My 4h is the hardest club for me to hit and may drop and add a 7W. Those iron/woods are the easiest I've ever hit. I have always had issues with trajectory being notoriously low but not with these.

Currently carry 3W and a 3Hy, longest iron is a 4. Adding a 5W and not sure if I'm yanking the Hybrid or one of the wedges from the bag. I don't hit the hybrid consistently and am leaning to pulling it.

I have the same issue with a 3W, dont trust it enough, my bag goes from driver at 7.5 degrees to a 19 degree 3hy. then 3iron down.
but my gap from driver (270) to 3hy (200-210) is pretty substantial. I have researched and even with a 5W with almost the same loft will more than likely get more club head speed and entail allow the ball to go further. I intend to conduct the experiment very soon so i will try to remember to update you with the results.

You had the same issue I had. There was about a 70 yard gap between my driver and my next best club, 4i. I got fitted for a hybrid and 3w and just committed to hitting it from longer ranges and I got over the yips I had with the fairway woods type club.

I appreciate all the input folks

I think I will be dumping the 4i soon. I have a buddy that has an old hybrid rescue, I believe its a 4 at 21 degrees that I'll be playing a round this weekend, I may give it a try before purchasing anything new.
