I checked my BP today and it was 145/100. Lately it has been sitting around 135/90 or so, but this is the first time I've seen readings this high.

In my younger days I was 190 lbs, but I have been lazy the past decade and gotten way up to 260. So I need to lose weight, but man I dread getting back in the gym.

Do you think I need to tell my doc and get on BP meds in meantime? My dad and grandad both died of heart attacks at my age and I am kinda getting a wake-up call.

If this isn't enough motivation, you have much deeper issues

You are drastically cutting your life expectancy and quality of life now.

You don't necessarily need to get in the gym but get a fitbit/apple watch/etc and get at least 10,000 steps a day.

Prioritize eating protein, try to cut out sugars as much as you can. Make reasonable changes so you don't get burned out.

This should be all the motivation you need to get off the sofa and get moving.

Start with baby steps and go for walks in the evenings, increase that to consent runs. Add some weights in. Stick with it and it will become a habit.

Discipline > Motivation.

Motivation will only take you so far. Are you willing to lift when you have a cold? When you're tired? When you just don't feel like it today?

Stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something. Death is winning.

Cut all the junk out of your diet
Walk 10k steps a day
Get in the gym and lift
No one in the gym is looking at you
No one in the gym is judging you
You don't have to feel awkward about it
If you start this journey, people in your life will try to derail you. They may not even realize they are doing it. Ignore them.

Get to work.

Get on the treadmill and watch a David Goggins video if you want motivation, but it’s not about motivation. It’s about crafting a new identity as someone who values fitness and goes to the gym. Once you buy in to that, it’s all infinitely easier from there. You have to change your mindset.

Start your journey incrementally. Small tweaks to your lifestyle, diet, and activity levels one by one over time are the most sustainable. Read Atomic Habits for a good explanation on stacking positive habits.

I’ve been there friend, but you are your own worst enemy here and I think you know that. I have almost completed a full body recomp down 50 lbs in a year and see myself as a gym goer who values health and wellness. Can’t see myself going back to the sad sack unhealthy loser who was wasting away, physically and mentally. You can do the same.

Also. Take pictures of yourself daily. You won’t see any progress for a bit. But when you look back in 30-45 days and compare the pictures, you’ll be amazed

Well, you’re gonna die, so there’s that. If you’re out of shape and 260, I doubt blood pressure is your only health concern. You need a doctor. Going to the gym alone won’t fix BP. Go see a doctor, get on a treadmill, get good sleep, manage stress, fix your diet. Take whatever meds you need. Get back to 190.

Brother as others have posted this should be your wake up call. You said you dread going to a gym? Any reasons why? You do not have to go to a gym to change your lifestyle and improve health. Do you have a spouse? Children? That should provide motivation enough to at least do something. Where do you live?

Same here. Dad had his first heart attack at 31. Just lost a half brother to heart disease.

I run a lot. I will die from something, but it won't be cardiovascular related.

Its just the work aspect of it. I have gotten lazy.

In my early 30s I was a gym rat. Lifted heavy weights and ran miles on treadmill. Ate nothing but protein and greens. I found that 190 was as low as I could go without starving myself. I was 175 in college (but I wasn't lifting and didn't have much muscle mass).

In my late 30s, after I got out of gym routine, I hovered around 225 and thought I was fat then. But man at 260 I feel like shite. (I am 6'1).

Never had an issue with BP, it was 120/80 or lower all my life. Last few years it has creeped up.

Good news is that all my labs were fine. Triglycerides were normal (97) and LDL was 83. My A1C was also normal.

This should be your wake up call. Hell, start off small. Dedicate an hour per day to just walking for starters. Keep adding healthy habits in once you've developed one. Since you're already lacking motivation don't take on too many changes at once because it's much easier to get discouraged.

Start today, man. Not Monday, not after Mardi Gras, after the birthday bash, etc…

I was severely overweight my entire fricking life, 38 years. 23 months ago I decided to stop the nonsense and get right. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done bar none. I’m no longer a ticking time bomb (I hope) and feel like I’ll be here for my wife and kids for the long haul.

The best advice I can give is what worked for me. We’re all different so you’ll need to find what’s best for you and your situation.

1. Get a smart watch and get 10k+ steps a day

2. Eat your goal weight, 190g of protein a day. Fill in the rest of your calories with healthy fats or carbs. I like this calculator that 777 posted LINK

3. 90% of my diet is meat, veggie, sweet potatoes or jasmine rice, Greek yogurt, eggs, and fruits.

4. Start in the gym with resistance training asap. It’s a fat burner, lean mass gainer, and stress reliever. The progress you make will keep you driven. Not motivated.

5. Get your hormones checked. My testosterone was in the toilet. I very likely did it to myself with my reckless living for 38 years, but it is what it is. I fixed it with exogenous TestC and it made a HUGE difference. Huge being an understatement.

6. Last and most controversial, GLPs (shut up mingo). I don’t give two shits about anyone’s opinion on them, they are magical when used appropriately and completely changed my life for the better. If you find yourself struggling and need a boost, I would look into them

Sounds like you know exactly what you need to do and have done it before.

Cut all processed foods from your diet. Eat meat, fish, vegetables, fruit.

You have no energy and no motivation because your diet is shite. Eat real, Whole unprocessed Foods every single meal for just one week and you’ll notice an immediate boost in mood and energy.

If you can’t stay motivated with going to the gym then just go outside and walk. Sunlight, moderate cardio and time in nature are literally miracle workers that modern society has taken away from us.

Eat real food. Get outside.

Get on YouTube and search motivational speeches and just keep those on repeat. They can be corny but it works. Be cognizant of what you feed your body and your mind.
There’s so much negativity in the world you need to offset it with positive input.

My dad died at 57 from a heart attack and missed meeting his only grandchild by 3 months. I’m mad at him every day because he could have avoided it but he was too stubborn to change his lifestyle.

Don't decide every day whether or not you are going to the gym. Decide one time and then stick to it. Also don't get there and then wander around looking for something you feel like doing. Pick a plan and do it no matter what.

Also, the gym doesn't make you lose weight. That's diet. I've gained weight in the last year. It's just better looking weight.

Yes. And make sustainable diet and exercise changes. You know why everyone signs up for the gym in January and quits by now? Because going from zero to gym hero and full paleo is a fricking joke for the vast majority of the population. Make an adjustment every two weeks. This week, it's yogurt instead of a donut. Two weeks from now, it's eggs for breakfast at home, instead of whatever shite they're slinging at the place on the way to work. It'll add up before you know it, and you won't suffer zero carb flu, etc.

Use ChatGPT. I tell it when I’m being lazy and it’ll call me out and get me moving. Have it respond as if it were Jacko Willink
