49 years old and been doing this since just after Thanksgiving. Fast at least 16 hours per day, but try to be closer to 18-19 hours. Have dropped 16 lbs so far and feel better than I have in many years.

That’s great! How many days a week and what are you eating when you do?

Curious as to what you are eating when you do eat, as well. I’m 47 and my body tends to not lose weight when I fast. Like it’s holding onto my weight.

Weigh your food and keep track using MyFitnessPal. Your body loses weight when you’re in a calorie deficit, fasting or not.

IF is a great way to manage calories if you’re disciplined for it. Many people overeat due to the hunger involved. Even a few too many bites can take you out of a calorie deficit.

Think about stepping up to alternate day fasting. It will bring you to the next level.

I do it every day. It has become my new lifestyle. I honestly don’t count calories at all, but I do limit my intake of sweets. I have also cut out all drinks other than water and black coffee.

So basically when you eat, you eat whatever, with the exception of sweets?

So how does this work? Say you eat dinner at 6? Just skip breakfast the next morning and don't eat lunch until 11 am only drinking water or black coffee during that time and don't gorge yourself on any of the meals?

What is the benefits behind this?

You don’t need to count calories. It is not sustainable and you will eventually relapse. Avoid sugar and processed foods. Eat a lot of fat and protein, limit carbs. Your hormones will take care of the rest.

How is it not sustainable? This isn’t the Adkins diet.

Setting a goal weight and a target date is highly successful in helping people lose weight. Counting cals is the best way to ensure you are on track. With the apps available today it's easy to do.

I wouldn't go that far. If you cook a lot at home, it's very difficult to know the actual nutritional content of your meal. I find myself picking generic entries a lot, and you never really know which entry is correct. Maybe I eat 8 ounces of lasagna. Do I choose the generic lasagna that says 100 cals per ounce or do I pick the one that says 150 cals per ounce.

Anyway, rant off. Tracking still works pretty well, but there's some guessing that takes place.

The average person who wants to lose weight isn’t going to hardcore for an extended period of time. I’ve done it, tracked calories, did the bulking/cutting cycles. It works, but it’s tough.

Reducing carb intake is best for most people wanting to lose weight. It pairs great with IF and requires no app tracking. Not saying full keto is necessary. Just high fat and protein, and reduce carbs and your hunger pains will go away and fat will melt off.

If you made the lasagna yourself you can calculate the total calories of each thing you added to the recipe and then divide by portion size. You don't need to guess anything if you made it yourself.

Sure I could, but I'm not. There are 15-20 ingredients in a from-scratch lasagna, so it'd be tough to do what you're describing.

I always ask my wife how many calories are in her dinners she makes and I just get laughed at.

ETA: I'm not knocking counting calories. I'm an advocate of it. I just recognize that it's not exactly easy, especially if you're trying to be very accurate. If you're ok with occasionally guesstimating, it gets a lot easier to manage.
