Peloton FTP test question

I purchased a peloton back in March and I have been doing power zone training for a few months now. I’m at a point where it’s time to retest for new zones and I am wanting to know if it is cheating of sorts to stand out of the saddle for the entirety of the 20 minute test. Would it skew the numbers and eventually hurt my training by over-inflating my average output?

You think you can stay out of the saddle for 20 minutes?

average output
FTP isn't exactly your average power. it is the highest wattage that you can sustain for an hour without fatigue. and before a 20-minute ftp test you should do a warmup that includes a 5-minute all out, balls to the wall effort. that effort usually keeps you honest and prevents you from over-inflating your 20-minute effort.
and like the other poster said, you think you can sprint out of the saddle for a full 20 minutes?

edited to answer your question, i mean if you are only using this metric for training on the peloton bike i don't think it will be an issue. if you were using it for racing, you don't want to over-estimate your ftp because you'll wind up cracking.

"sprinting" to get a higher FTP isn't really gonna help
you want a realistic number for your workouts to be based on. if it's too high the workouts will be too hard and you'll get hurt or quit

I would be very surprised if you could do better out of the saddle than in. The only point of the test is to establish the zones for your future rides, so you may as well do it properly.

20 minutes is a LONG time out of the saddle... for a pro.
There are lots of strategies for FTP tests but just lay down the power you can sustain for the entire test. The more you ride the better you will get at being able to put out even power over an extended period and let the last pedal stroke be the last one you have in you, much like a TT effort. An FTP test is as much a mental exercise as a physical one when it gets tough remember Rule #5: Harden the frick Up. When you know your body well enough you will be able to do it at a fairly sustained power which is what you want. Putting more power down at the beginning of the last couple of minutes almost always means you overall average will be lower than it should have been.

If he could sprint for 20 minutes then it would be an accurate number. But he can't and neither can Dylan Groenewegen or Mark Cavendish.
