What’s the best way to go about having one built? Order a kit and have it installed? Use a contractor to handle all of it start to finish? Or just do it myself…

I went to Mueller and sat down with the salesman, detailing what I wanted with suggestions from him and incorporating those ideas. He put that into the computer program and it spit out plans with a materials/cut list. Delivered the metal to our property and unloaded.
We had used the plans to get a form built and slab poured and when the materials arrived I had hired a crew to erect it. I think it was Central Erectors. We had 12 foot porches running down both sides and across the front. For some reason the side porches weren’t included in their deal, so me and a friend installed the porches.

Best way? Turn key, but you pay for it.
Cheapest way? Order a kit and install yourself.
I found many of the turnkey guys to be pretty close to the kit+install prices. One guy tried to overcharge for the concrete and lost the job. The others were pretty close and saved me the hassle of dealing with various contractors and coordinating. He handled everything from forming/dirtwork, concrete, and erection.
When I talked to Mueller directly, they were incredibly high on pricing.

Yep, find a turn key builder and have them do it. I just had a 30x70 shop done this way. Mueller was super high when I got a quote from them. Mine is a red iron building welded together. Don't do a tube steel if you want it to survive a bad storm. I also had it fully insulated with the vinyl faced insulation and I am doing all the inside framing, etc. For my office and loft space.

Yes they are incredibly high, but I’ve yet to see a better building. Most of the ones I’ve been in look so cheap and flimsy. Not recommending mueller at all, but if price is not a major concern, they are probably who you want. Maybe Reeds Metals, or Walker Metals would be comparable. Don’t know a lot about them. I do think you want the roof purlins on 2 foot centers. Not everybody did that when I got mine, but they may now.

My contractor bought all the materials from Mueller, so maybe he gets better pricing or I was quoted for a bolt together kit, I'm not sure. I believe my roof purlins are 4 ft on center but they are thick I beams so they should stand up fine.

Yeah, they gave me some spiel about 175 mph winds, post Katrina code, I like it, but I know it added quite of bit to the cost. Mine is bolt-together, red iron, with massive I-beams I hit my head on every time I go up in the attic. Love it, though.

I have a 30x50 red iron with a 15’ gable extension. Mine is also fully welded vs bolted. I used the vinyl faced white insulation and am very happy with it. Wish the weather would cooperate so I could pour my driveway to it though.
I used AllTrade Construction out of Walker. They did a good job and the pricing was competitive.
B&J Metal Buildings out of Central and Essential Fabricators is some other turnkey guys I talked to. All were similar pricing for turnkey. They will also erect any building or kit you purchase as well. My buddy recommended Westside Buildings across the river as the cheapest and good quality. They are old school with no website or advertising though, just a phone number.
Surprisingly, square tubing buildings are not that much cheaper. For the same layout, it was only around $5k cheaper, with me having to handle the concrete.
If you do go through Mueller, make sure you go through one of their construction guys who will build it for you. They get much better prices, and can tweak what you want to save some costs if you’d like.

I’m about to get the slabbed poured on my shop. 30x40 with a 20x40 side gable. All red iron welded with insulation. 2 walk in doors and 2 12’ roll up doors. So the slab will be 50x40. 12’ walls. For around 46k

Mine is 40x80 that I had a friend whose a local contractor build. It has 1200sqft of living space that 6 of us are sharing while we build a house on the property. Turn key is they way to go if you can afford it. Building materials are outrageous though.

What’s the best way
Draw it yourself, figure out the materials, form your own slab, weld your own metal, etc etc.
If money is no factor than pay any one of the prefab guys to do it for you. If you want the best, you have to DIY

I built mine about a year ago, and Mueller was cheaper than Reeds by $1000 .

You know, I spoke with reps from Reed’s at the Outdoor Show at Lamar Dixon awhile back, and they assured me they had buildings as good, at way better prices. I gave my daughter and SIL the contact info as they were looking to have one built, and they said the same thing. I just thought there was a mixup or something, because that rep said repeatedly they were cheaper. Hmmm.

I had a pretty bad experience with Reed's Sulphur, LA location 2 years ago. My building turned out nice but the process dealing with them to get there was terrible.
