6500 watt generator won’t start

Just 2 years old and barely used. Spark plug is good. Plenty of good oil. Tank was bone dry before I added new gas and still nothing. There is no petcock to be turned open. Is this a carburetor issue? If I use starting fluid, where do I spray it? My thinking is fuel line is blocked somewhere. Any simple fixes?

Previously, did you use ethanol gas? If so, did you use a fuel stabilizer?

Is it making any noise at all?
Look very good, lots of times there is a main rocker switch
Needs 3 things
Fire, gas and air figure out which one it ain’t getting
Pull fuel line from carb is gas dripping?
Open breather box , inspect air filter ( and this is where you would spray starting fluid into the carb)

I have a Generac 6500 that I got for Ida and the same thing was happening to mine yesterday.
After a few minutes of freaking out and reading some trouble shooting tips, I turned the choke off and it started on the first pull. Ran great once I got it started.
Hopefully yours is something simple like mine was.

Tap the carburetor bowl lightly with a screwdriver. Maybe the float is sticking holding up fuel from filling the bowl
Take air filter off and spray started fluid directly into carb throat from there.

There was likely old gasoline sitting in the carb bowl for 2 years - bowls need to be drained after running the gens out of gas with long term storage. I’d drain the bowl, tap on it like mentioned if the needle valve on the carb float is suck, and try again. 90+% chance it is carburetor related. I learned that the hard way. Odds are you can get it to run after doing that.
And at a later date install a petcock in the gasoline line to be able to shut the gasoline flow to the carb after usage. Without a petcock, you might need to pinch off the gasoline line to the carb with some pliers when draining the bowl now that you have a full tank of gasoline.

not trying to hijack but, maybe keep this as a generator issue thread.
i think this is my problem I drained all of the gas after the last use. now, it cranks, starts for like a second and stops. Is there a procedure for draining the bowl and making sure the float is free?

When this happened to me, I took every part of the carb off that I felt I could, and cleaned it all with seafoam. I then sprayed seafoam into any space I could get to. I put it back together and it started on 3rd crank. My engine handyness is about 2/10.

found a video for what looks like the same generator that I am working on.
Heading home to give this a shot. Anyone know what those little thin cleaning rods are called?
ETA:Found them.

Some carb bowls have a second bolt that allow you to remove it and drain the bowl; if not, just remove the one bolt, drop the bowl, remove the old gasoline, and while bowl is off gently move the float up and down a few times, and put the bowl back on. More often than not, that alone fixed my running problem with fresh gasoline in the tank. You can put a little Seafoam in the gas tank also to help clean the carb.

Carburetor jet cleaning brushes

thanks.
i'm considering taking the carb apart like the guy in the video and doing a thorough cleaning. i'm fairly handy but, this is a new world for me.

They are also referred to torch cleaning tip brushes, something like that

Grainger, perhaps Harbor Freight might have them in stock.
I only resort to using those if the carburetor is gummed up. Try draining the bowl, and moving the float with your finger first to see if you can get it to run. Then if not you might have to remove the carb & use the brushes & spray carb cleaner to clean the gummed up jets.

i use a the wire from a bread tie to clean the jets and passages when cleaning or rebuilding a carb. works well

Took the carb apart and cleaned all the holes i could see. New battery. New spark plug. It turns over but doesn’t start even for a second.

Did you unscrew the jets and clean them?
