My electric bill the past 2 summers have gone up from previous years by 30ish%.
Is their something in the HVAC unit that can slowly go bad causing the unit to operate but drive up overall cost?
This winter the bill is very much comparable to the last few years.

everyone's has gone up, may ask your friends around you but I'm sure its just a inflation / COL thing

you arent using more electricity, they are just charging you 35% more for the same KW of power used

Leaky duct work in the attic would definitely cause higher energy consumption but you said heating was the same so probably not that. Did you say if you have furnace or heatpump?

Sure…you could have a tiny refrigerant leak which would cause your unit to work harder (run longer) to keep your house cool.

Exactly, the OP needs to look at his electricity usage and see if it’s increased, not the dollar amount of the bill. These are not the same thing and are not linear.

Take your electric bills from the last two years, and look at the kWh consumption over the last two years and see if it's the price per kWh that increased or if usage has increased. Should be relatively clear.

Then it shouldn't be any major duct leakage. Really there shouldn't be anything wrong with the AC since the heatpump
works basically the same in summer as winter.
You need to look at KW usage in the summer months compared to years past. You should be able to pull up this info on your energy's provider's website.

Compare your electric bill for the mild weather months of April and October, when AC or Heat use is typically low.
That should show you better about how your rates have increased over time.
My rates with Alabama Power are somewhere around 15 cents per kwh.
I do live in the middle of nowhere, if that has some effect on the rate.
