I am in a new construction home with an aerobic septic system with sprinkler head water discharge. I’ll ask my builder in the AM, but figured I’d ask my questions here also.

1.) what chlorine tablets should be used? I see red label, blue label, etc. is there a certain one I should use?

2.) How often should I add these? I wasn’t told anything but I’m pretty sure I should be adding them. 1 a month from Google search but I’d appreciate any experience.

3.) For sprinkler discharge, do you let it go as needed or make it go off a timer? If a timer, how long have you found is needed (an hour block, 2 hours, etc.)? We have a family of 3 if that helps.

Thanks!

Ive had one for 20 years and never heard of using chlorine, or timers. Sorry but don’t know?

My system has a sump pump with level controls that feeds the sprinkler heads.
Kicks in when water level is high , shuts off when clean water tank level is low. In otherwords, it’s automatic.

Ive had my system for a year, and on my 3rd chlorine tablet- norweco blue tablets from Home Depot.

I only add the tablets when my wife says she smells the sprinklers on her daily walks.

1. Use the tablets specific to septic. Do not use pool tablets as they will kill your grass. I buy the tablets with the red top at home depot.

2. Add them when there's no more chlorine in the chlorinator.

3. Your system may have a timer where you can set it to spray at the same time each day/night. It will also have floats in the tank that will activate the sprinklers if the water level is too high outside of the time you set.

Just to follow up and close this one out, I spoke to the septic system installation company that worked on my house, and I have an AA500-3530 system which does not require a chlorinator (it is optional). I don't have the chlorinator so that settles it for me .

I think the Chlorine thing is a scam. Aerobic systems should put out clean water... period.

funny this got brought up. bought a house last year and just found out it had a septic sprayer system. Guess the people I bought this house from didnt know that or didnt care which lead to 2 of the three septic sprayer heads being lost.

just found the approximate location of two of them after my outlet on the septic pump went out and once we got it working found the two huge wet spots from the "lost" sprinkler heads.

going to spend this weekend find them and doing some pvc work to replace them

I think the tank has a level switch that activates the sprinklers when it gets enough water to dump. The timer runs a little air compressor that pumps air in to the digester…that’s why they call it “aerobic”

It's not a scam, the bacteria (good and bad) should be killed off before being discharged.
