Any tips on finding and eradicating an underground yellow jacket nest?

My son got lit up messing around at the base of a dead tree. I found one hole and hit it with a propane torch. Not sure if they sent a “fire signal” (if that’s even a thing) because no more than 5 came out. I prodded around some soft spots with a piece of rebar. Felt some voids underneath but nothing would come out.

In the morning, after it's got bright and the sun has warmed up that nest, you should be able to see them flying in and out.
Don't set the tree on fire, use gas but don't light it.

There will always be an escape hole somewhere close by too. You have to plug it also or a lot of them will fly out the back door.
Like you said, find where they are going in and out, then get a couple of old 2 litre bottles, fill about halfway with gas, then wait till dusk and turn those bottles upside down and shove them in the holes. leave them till the next day and they will all be dead They can't escape and the gas fumes crystallize them.

Toss some raw meat near that stump you will see them flying to it. they have more than one entrance once you find their entrance cover them up they will die or poison them.

I kept getting stung mowing the yard every few weeks. Same area of the yard. I watched that area as it started to get dusk and figured out where their hole was. I went and bought some spray and shot the whole bottle down that hole right as dusk the next day. Not sure if I handled the situation right but I didn’t have problems with them anymore. Those yellow jackets pack a nasty little sting.

I’ve found the hole and sprayed it full of foam wasp killer at dusk. Never had a problem after that

Buy a can of Purina friskies ocean whitefish cat food and put 2 drops of FRontline/fipronil in it and mix. Put in a place where animals or kids can't get at it or put a chicken wire or something over that still allows the yellow jackets in.
This will eliminate any nest in the area.
If you use too much fipronil they won't eat it. So remember less is more.

I recently used an indoor fogger, turn on, stuff in entrance, dead. Did it at night.

A fun temporary solution I've used is to set up your shop vac hosed at the entrance to the nest. Turn it on for a half hour and let it do work.

Call someone to do it, or you are playing with fire.
Yellowjackets don't fk around. There are some YT videos that will instill the fear of God in you if you watch them. I strongly recommend checking those videos out before you do anything.
Like some have said here, if you're gonna do it yourself (gas) do it at night and you best find out where both exits are.

Back in early 90s, college summer job cutting grass, I got absolutely lit up by ground jackets! I was pushing a mower by an in-ground pool when something stung my leg, I reached down to swat it away and that's when they all got me. For a split second I saw the mower engulfed in the swarm, I let go of the mower and dove into the pool to escape. Got stung 13 times.

I found my huge underground nest by riding over their entrance/exit with my riding mower. The stings felt like someone rapid fired a BB gun at me. I watched for activity to stop right at dusk and did the 2 liter pepsi bottle full of gas down the hole. We never found another back door hole. After a couple of days my youngest son dug up the nest. It was football sized. Amazing that they built that underground like that. Their entrance hole was about 3 inches wide at the grass level.

find hole, wait till dark and dump a gallon or 2 of household ammonia in there. Cover with a bucket.

I watched a YT video on that. Tons came out!

Find the escape hole, put a screen metal screen with a hose sized hole cut out on top (stake it into the ground), squirt a bottle of dawn in there, then fill er up with water until it's overflowing for a 10 or so minutes.
ETA:
Or gas, but I didn't want to do gas.
