Looking to get some ceramic window tint 70-80% for some windows around the house. Wife doesn't want the solar screens which are too dark and we've seen some window tints that she doesn't mind.

Anybody ever had them installed or installed themselves?

Reputable brands, tried looking for 3M but having trouble unless I go through an installer

It is amazing what a low tint ceramic film can block heat wise. I don't think it is hard to install, especially compared to a car window.

Had it added to about 30 windows in an office I worked at. We had 5-6 windows end up cracking over the next couple years. Have been told everything from the glass gets hotter to they probably already had small cracks behind the trim. Still glad we had it done though.

Just my theory, but it seemed like I had more birds flying into my window after it was tinted.

You need tint made for residential windows.

Do not just get any tint bc they aren't made for double+ pane windows. As stated using the wrong one can superheat the gas between the panes and crack them.

I have used the Gila stuff from lowes with no problem. Use lots of application spray and take your time.

I got some tint off Amazon and put on some of the West-facing windows in my sunroom. Made a huge difference. If you walked into my sunroom at 3-5pm on a hot day, you could feel the room was significantly hotter on that side. It instantly cooled that room several degrees. Forgot to do a before/after temp comparison.

Bonus was I also had a fridge on that side of the room, so the tint has probably helped it a ton too.

Application wasn't too hard. But if you're a perfectionist, you're probably going to get frustrated... Cutting it to the windows dimensions is tricky and you'll probably have some imperfections. I also have dogs that sleep in that room so it was impossible to avoid having a hair or two get in there. It's like putting a screen protector on your phone but on a much larger scale.

Our sunroom and living area across the back of the house has full height windows. The windows are double paned with a factory tint in the glass. Birds are occasionally into them….including blue birds that attack their reflection. I have had to tape aluminum foil strips on the windows or use a plastic owl in an attempt to discourage the bluebirds

The windows have a lifetime warranty. We investigated putting additional tint on the sunroom windows but were told that would nullify the warranty so we didn’t.

On the new ceramic tints the lightness/darkness is not what blocks the heat.
