Appliance store vs HD or Lowe's

Is there any advantage to one over the other when buying a washer/dryer?

I'll say this much about Lowes. I bought a washing machine years ago from Lowes and purchased the protection plan. A little over a year later the control board was having a timing issue on the final spin. The washing machine still worked as it was supposed to, but the final spin would occasionally stop a little short. It was really not a big deal. But I made a claim to see if I could get it fixed. Repair man came out and looked it over and confirmed it needed a new control board. Unfortunately parts were unavailable. According to the protection plan, this was filed under "not repairable" and I was issued a full refund for the washing machine. I used that washing machine for about 5 years before it finally crapped out. And it was basically free.

Don't use HD. They're not in control of their delivery system. It's third partied, and a good old fashioned charlie foxtrot.
Go somewhere like Stines. You can deal with them directly for everything. They have the old Sears model going where they have their own service team for appliances.

Having just bought a new oven from Lowe’s that malfunctioned from the start (obviously not their fault) the return window is 48 hrs so don’t try to get anything fixed if there is an immediate problem.
Ultimately I got the oven replaced but it took roughly 3 weeks for it all to happen.

You do better with a Comeaux or Conn's than you do with the box stores.
The box stores are often cheaper and offer better credit terms.

Yes, HD and Lowes do not sell Speed Queens

Go to a local appliance store and get a Speed Queen.

My father had to buy a new water heater recently. He went to a mom-n-pop store that gave him the impression they had them in stock. They didn't, but told him they would have one delivered in a few days. Kept moving the date. It's been a month, and he's still waiting on it. Could've gone to Lowe's and picked one up that day, would've been cheaper too...

Box stores are sometimes cheaper. Speed Queen is not available at the box stores. If you are concerned about warranty/repairs then a full service appliance store that offers repair service may offer an advantage, but that does depend on the specific store and their business practices.
I do miss the days when there was a Sears locally. They were hard to beat on appliance availability. Lowes was the next best in terms of big box stores.
Overall, I find an honest, reputable full service local appliance store is hard to beat.

I know the local place I got my last fridge at, if you bought a warranty and never used it, then it was issued back to you as a gift card. Yeah, it kind of keeps you trapped in their system, but it's also going to come in handy when my dishwasher craps out here soon and I have $200 to go towards it. Their workers were also head-and-shoulders above Lowes/HD as far as knowledge.

I will never use HD again. Bought a new dishwasher for my folks a few weeks ago. Went to HD because it was close etc. The installers were for shite and looked for any excuse not to do the work. I will never use them again.

I've bought many appliances over the years from a local appliance store in Baton Rouge, Staton's. In all but one case they met or beat the HD and Lowes prices. Most places like Stanton's have their own service and repair departments with long-term employees.

I'll pay the extra at a local appliance store that services what they sell.

Stanton’s will deliver and haul off the old appliance. They service what they sell. They don’t sell LG, I tell folks, if they make TV’s, don’t buy their appliances. Stanton’s sells Speed Queen, they will outlast most people, leave it to someone in your will.
Kathy is the lady I use at Stanton’s, she knows appliances.

Prefer Costco for the warranty and service. That being saidb they don't carry speed queen so probably local for it

This is good info - thanks for sharing!

The biggest issue I have with local stores is the service. Maybe it's just my local store, but my fridge recently went out. Called them for service and they said they were booked out 2 weeks. Can't have no fridge with 3 kids for 2-3 weeks. So for me, "service what they sell" was completely useless. I still purchased my replacement through them, along with a SQ washer last year and a dishwasher the year before that. lol. Keep your money local if nothing else.

Another local business that services what the sell is Graugnard's in Donaldsonville. They have the old school business model of keeping the customer happy. The sell Speed Queen and every appliance they sell is serviced by their staff. Great family owned business if you are in that area.
