I added a lot of dirt to my front and backyard to fill very low spots and as somewhat expected, I’m getting crabgrass and Dallisgrass. I’ve seen on other posts that MSM turf works well And is reasonably priced. Is MSM my best option without breaking the bank?

I only have about .3 acre of acre so based on the treatment directions for MSM for this, I should be able to treat the lawn several times on a 2oz bottle.

Are there are any other options that aren’t as expensive as Celsius and the like.

I just finished reasearching this pretty thoroughly and the only thing I found to be effective and killing Dallisgrass is MSMA. I don't believe the MSM Turf will work on Crab or Dallisgrass.

Crabgrass is easy. Grab anything with Quinclorac in it. Most of the weed killers in HD or Lowes that say crabgrass killer will have this ingredient in it. I would just buy straight quinclorac on Amazon and mix it yourself. It will last you forever. Here is a link to it.. Quinclorac

Dallisgrass is a real SOB. It is a perennial so it keeps coming back each year if you don't kill it or remove it. Really depends on the type of grass you have. If you have bermuda, MSMA works really well. If not, and you just have a little of it, you may be best to dig it out with a shovel.

I have a professional spray my yard and even they had problems getting rid of the dallisgrass when I first hired them. They started in the spring spot treating it, then really got aggressive with it in the fall. The following year I still had some, but not as much. By the two year mark it was all gone. I don't know what they used though.

They had the crabgrass licked after the first application.

It’s St Aug. I am speculating I have Dallisgrass but it could be mostly crabgrass.

Post some pics if you want some of us to take a look and let you know. Quinclorac will definitely knock the crabgrass on its arse.

If you want to get creative with the Dallisgrass, use this method:
The Dallisgrass always grows higher than the st aug. Put a latex glove on one hand and a cheap garden over that. Dip the glove in a roundup solution and gently wipe the top of the Dallisgrass (don't touch the st aug obviously). The Dallisgrass will be gone in 10 days. Done this a few times in folks yards when its gotten out of control. If it's not much, just cut it out.

Can’t use quinchlorac on a St Augustine or Centipede lawn without damaging it, though it’s recommended for Bermudagrass and Zoysia.

Can’t use sethoxydim for crabgrass control in St Augustine (will damage/kill St. Aug) but you can use it in a Centipede lawn. A pre-emergent applied by mid-Feb next year will be your best control method for crabgrass in St Augustine.

Dallisgrass, if you are sure that is what you have, is more problematic. I’ll refer you to this article from the LSU AgCenter.

I used the LSU Ag website and MSMA is the recommended Post Emergent option for Dallisgrass and Crabgrass so thats where i got my initial thought process from. However, i don't know if MSM turf is the same as MSMA and MSMA is substantially more expensive.

Understood - MSM Turf (metsulfuron methyl) is not the same herbicide as MSMA. MSMA is used on Bermudagrass turf to control the weeds you are targeting but will kill St Augustine or Centipede grass. You did say you had St Augustine - correct? Honestly, your options are limited with post-emergent control of these 2 weed grasses in St Augustine.

I've got a ton of dallisgrass in my front yard, and I sprayed what I could with glyphosphate. I plan on digging it out with a yard knife and buying sod to plug it. I'm so tired of dealing with it, and I just don't think there is any other way to make sure it is gone for good.

To be clear, most of this grass is coming through the sand where no St Aug grass has grown yet so I may try some chemicals you listed. The other option is to start digging which could take time but may be the best option.

If you have St. Augustine. Just sprinkle some Baking Soda on the Crabgrass, it will be dead within 12-24 hours with no harm to your St. Augustine grass. I promise this is no joke.

OK sorry I missed that. If there is no St Aug where you need to spray then you can use any of the herbicides labeled to control on crabgrass and dallisgrass mentioned by others in this thread, including glyphosate (“Roundup”). None of these herbicides mentioned have residual activity that will prevent St Aug from filling in the area overtime.

Also if I’m not mistaken, MSMA is no longer labeled for residential lawn use, but rather is labeled for use in commercial applications, sod farms, golf courses, etc. so I’m not sure you can purchase small containers of the product, usually 2.5 gal units, hence the higher cost.
