Best ways to keep squirrels out of vegetable garden?

What are some of your best ways that you can keep squirrels out of a vegetable garden? I just found 2 half eaten un-ripe tomatoes and i know it was squirrels. I have also been noticing the soil disturbed in a few areas where it looks like they are digging. Just trying to see what you all may use that you find works the best at keeping them out.
I do have a small dog but she mostly stays inside. She does go after them when she sees them tho. I have heard red pepper flakes or cayenne can be sprinkled about. Anyone have experience with that as well?

I bought an air rifle in January and have been eradicating them. I was killing 2-3 a week and now I'm only shooting 1 every week or two. There are still plenty of them assholes running around my neighborhood but I think they've figured out to stay away from my yard.

If it is dry there, like here, they are likely looking for water. Try putting a container with water for a few days and see if they leave the 'maters alone...
Otherwise, scarecrows work...

cayenne works but it needs to be reapplied often.

Bolt action .22 with silencer and subs.
All you’ll hear is the hammer hitting the firing pin.

i shoot them. they were eating my strawberries. squirrel nator never worked. other live trap never worked. lost a nissan to a squirrel as well. ate all the wires in one night. have had rabbits eat my cantaloupe too. but i leave them alone. kinda of raised them since they were born and they never left. plastic owl decoy works for me

I don't believe the live traps didn't work. I can catch a squirrel in 2-3 hours with the live traps usually. Put some bird seed and peanut butter in a known area. If its a garden something from the garden will work.
You aren't going to deter a squirrel OP. You need to kill them.

I built a PVC frame for a net around my garden. I included a PVC door for ease of entry. Kept out the squirrels, but it also kept out the birds and larger insects; so I had to use more pesticides to control destructive bugs.

We have shot or trapped 18 in the last 2 years. The little woman has gotten good with her air pistol. This is mainly to keep them from digging in the pots and flower beds. We also have some tomatoes, peppers and herbs on the upper deck. One thing that hasn't been mentioned that works for pots: place plastic forks tines up, handle deep in the soil. That works almost all the time, but they are spiteful little bastards.

I have a 4' fence with 2" x 4" openings and they went straight through them. So I put a 3' chicken wire fence with a foot of it folded over at the ground. The squirrels were going under it then. So I put a layer of bricks on top of the folder over chicken fence. This kept them out, but the chipmunks are still getting in there.

I shot one yesterday with an unripe cherry tomato in his mouth. I was tempted to hang him up to show the others....

One dug up my cucumber plant yesterday
Really wasn't wanting to have to hunt squirrels this year. I never see them out there but they are definitely getting into stuff.

To defeat the squirrel, you must think like the squirrel.

Was going to buy an airsoft gun today, it actually kills them?

Don't pump the pellet rifle up so high so the pellet won't break the sound barrier when exiting the muzzle.

These tree rats have caused thousands of dollars worth of damage now to our home and outdoor pavilion. We hired a service for a few days so we can see how they did it but after charging me $45 a visit and coming by twice a day to pick up traps we said F that and started doing it on our own.
If you're going to relocate you need to move them at least 4 miles away, otherwise they will come back. We've caught well over a dozen and a half in two weeks and 4 today alone.
If they are not relocated some distance away they will come back and have their babies there so I got sick of it and just started exterminating them in the trap.
This thing works wonders.
Peanut butter on the trap lever and a small bowl of peacans and peanut butter behind the trap lever. Put it at the base of the tree where they nest or the entrance to yourt garden.
