I have owned a Spirit 320 for 12 years. It's faded but still works good. I did get free burner tubes from Weber just before the 10 year burner warranty expired. Weber also sent me a free Weber grill brush with the burner tubes.

Yes, Genesis is a much better grill. I would say the last generation genesis holds up better than the current generation with some of the cosmetic panels, but the grill itself is solid.

Have owned both. They are both good grills, but would recommend the Genesis if you can swing it. Gets hotter faster, holds heat better, and has a higher top end.
Whichever one you go with, spring for a good grill cover and either should give you many years of service.

does it matter if stainless steel or black?

5 years ago I bought a Spirit, it's been fine, but I wish I would have sprung the extra for the genesis. More BTU's per SQ inch (don't look at total BTU's, you gotta look at BTU's per square inch!). Searing on a Spirit is a fools errand unless you can get some flareup off the Flavorizer Bars.

Can't speak for the Spirit since the only Weber I've owned is the Genesis.
I bought it about 5 years ago to replace a 5 burner Charbroil I had and it seemed like every damn year I had to replace parts on the Charbroil.
The only thing I've changed on the Genesis since I've had it is the battery for the igniter and I recently bought a set of 5 flavorizer bars to replace the ones that came with the grill that are showing wear and tear. Other than that, nothing but great cooking experiences.
I do keep it inside my shop when not in use, so it's totally out of the weather.

Do any of the Spirit models have the side burner? I use that feature a lot on my Genesis.

Went and looked at Genesis today at Lowes.
The 315 stainless was $50 more than the 325 black BUT the black had a sear zone/burner.
Recommendations?
