Brick Mailbox - Contractor Recommendations Lafayette Area
Posted on 3/31/23 at 10:19 am

My brick mailbox was completely destroyed by a teenager on their phone. Their parents offered to pay, but I am struggling to find someone who can/is willing to build a new one. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone in the Lafayette area who can do this?

if they can't do it, he can probably lead you in the right direction

Just an fyi, brick mailboxes are illegal and if that teenager was hurt the parents could sue. It has to be a “break away” mailbox. That’s why when the state/parish/town blacktop a road, they demolish the brick/decorative mailboxes and put back up break away boxes.

Just looked this up and it blows my mind that they're illegal.

You live on Alonda by chance?
Also, mind blown that brick mailboxes could get you sued

Yep, I wasn’t trying to be controversial to OP by the way, I just know that a lot of people don’t know this. All mailbox’s out by the road must have a break away post. If someone was to run into your brick mailbox and “injure” themselves, they would win if they sued your homeowners insurance. I’ve seen people literally bring guns out to the road as the DOTD contractors demolish their mailboxes so the motor grader can start the ditch slopes, only to find out that it was against the law to be there to begin with.

Maybe it's semantics, or maybe I'm not looking in the right direction, but I don't think a brick mailbox is "illegal." It does appear that the homeowners insurance can be held liable if an injury or worse occurs because of an incident though. My house and whole block is brick mailboxes that were built by the original builders to match each home. I would have to believe permits would be denied and brick mailboxes would be forced to be torn down and homeowners subject to fines if they were illegal.

Understandable.
What a world we live in. When someone else breaks YOUR stuff but YOU get sued because crashed into it? I'd love to meet whoever came up with that.

Brick Mail boxes are illegal because some kids like to ride their bikes real fast and irresponsibly like I used to do as a kid jumping curbs and intentionally landing into several boxes that I would place for crash landing stunts. Kids playing hard and not paying attention do stupid things. A few too many over the years get killed running into mailboxes and voila, new laws are passed. I don't agree with those type of laws because next Trees could be outlawed near the street as the Idiocracy levels increase over time. Darwin award winning kids like I could have been shouldn't drive new laws. I probably should have died doing other stupid things like jumping off the roof onto our trampoline, but then should a law be passed outlawing trampolines. A very small subset of kids getting hurt or killed or people crashing their cars into brick mailboxes should not get them outlawed in my opinion because eventually everything gets regulated and outlawed to the point you can't enjoy anything. If brick mailboxes are outlawed, why not outlaw telephone poles close to the road and cars parked in the streets to eliminate people dying that run into them?

Wow. Our entire neighborhood has brick mailboxes- 200+ homes. I never knew that.

It looks like some states do have statutes barring them, but I didn't see any such code for Louisiana. I don't see any suit being successful, given that parking on the street and other immovable objects are often near roadways. If someone leaves the road and hits your house, that won't move either. A brick mailbox, while sturdy, certainly won't stop a car, either. I say build away.
