Building my own pergola

Have any of you ever built your own pergola? I’ve got a 15x10’ pad off of my screened in back porch that I’d like to cover with a pergola. Any of you have any plans or tips for me? I’m a pretty novice builder. I guess I’d need a transit to get the proper grade on the canopy? Ive built a wood fence before and have helped a buddy out with a few around the house projects, but not very confident in my stand alone abilities. Better off just hiring it out?

Sequoia in New Orleans sells cedar kits in different sizes.

I built this one a few years ago and it's pretty self explanatory just from looking at it. The biggest pain is putting the notches on the boards to slide on top of the runners.

Was planning on building one on the island in my pond. Not going to happen now.

Depending on the cost, look at some of the kits on Costco, Sams, Wayfair or Lowe's Home Depot.
Can get a nice cedar one with pre-drilled holes and hardware for around $1000-$1200.
If you're trying to save money and build yourself, my guess is the materials alone if you're doing cedar will be close to $500.
I've got a Cedar gazebo from wayfair and its great, have a number of friends who have done the cedar kit and love them as well. Just a suggestion to eliminate the building side hassle if you're not super concerned with the budget.
Hiring out would guess you're looking at close to $2k but probably depends where you live. Nashville has insane demand and cost for fence building etc. I'm building a cedar fence right now and am week to week buying cedar from the lumber yard because demand is so high.
