Carpenter Bees

What would you do to stop carpenter bees from setting up home in a fence. I'm not wanting to kill all of them, but man, they seem to have a love for my primary gate and entryway. I can kill them all day long but it doesn't stop them and outside of new fence I'm wondering if anyone knows how to persuade them from a small spot I use daily. I know they don't have stingers and are not sting threat, I'm more interested in keeping the gate solid enough to last a bit. I tell my wife they are our guard bees...but I'm worried they will destroy the wood to the point it's no longer solid enough.

Go on the LSU AG center website and find a beekeeper who will remove them

I’ve had carpenter bees eating on my lean-to shed for 5+ years now. Yeah, my 2x4s have tons of holes, but knock on wood, it’s still standing after hurricanes and all these heavy wind thunderstorms that have blown through. Just this week I killed around 20 with a tennis racket. Over all, I’ve easily killed hundreds of them, but they keep coming like kamikazes.
I’m interested if there’s anyway to efficiently kill more since they’ve outsmarted my traps.

I put Sevin dust in a squirt bottle I got a Walmart. Put a flexible drinking straw on the squirt bottle. Stick straw in carpenter bee hole and squeeze a shot of the Sevin dust in the holes.

Does it kill them and act as a deterrent or just the former?

The Sevin dust gets on their bodies and they carry it into the back of the hole/chamber to kill the entire nest

We used to hit them with tennis rackets. PING! I still remember the sound.

Nothing works. They eat through the paint, the fake hornets nest, the poison I have used etc etc. They just keep coming back. LOL

I used to immediately jab a Phillips Screwdriver into the hole when I saw a carpenter bee crawl into my cedar fence. It didn't eliminate them but I got satisfaction when I felt one of them getting squished.

I spray all the exposed wood in my shop with permetherin as soon as I see the first one for the year. It seems to work well. I used to have millions of the little bastards shitting all over my stuff and making saw dust piles everywhere. Now I just have a handful throughout the spring. Its a noticeable improvement.

Where I live, we have a metric ton of wasps.. so we love us some carpenter bees as they go to town on fighting wasps.
Had a bad year of carpenter bees boring into our front porch posts, we just plucked them out, sent them on their way, filled the holes and repeated as necessary.

My trap under the deck has kept them away for years. 4x4 with holes drilled upward on the sides, and straight up from the bottom. Mason jar attached to bottom. They get in, go to light, die in the jar. I keep forgetting to empty it, it can get full.
If they will take out the wasps I might take it down for a bit. Hate the damn red devils.

I tried to look up a good article or video about it, but couldn't find much. Maybe I have extra special CBs, lol... but they really do dive bomb our nasty wasps.
I have a terrible reaction to even seeing a wasp, my neighbors could tell some stories of me running around like a crazy lady trying to evade them.. if I see a couple of CBs hanging around though, I don't freak out over the wasps and hornets because I'm confident the CBs will get them before they can get me.

Spray WD-40 in every hole they make.
Be sure to push the little red straw as far in the hole it will go then fill.it up.
Kills em.

I’ve thought about making a trap for them but I’m afraid it will only attract more.
Probably the best thing is to just kill them as you see them.

Years ago I read that Pledge lemon spray would keep spiders from building webs in the kids’ playhouses and stuff. I used it periodically and it worked.
In recent years carpenter bees came after our wooden swing set. Like we have a couple big holes in the side now thanks to them. So I tried the lemon Pledge. And it seems to help.
When I notice one flying around I’ll spray the metal connectors, slide, etc. I will spray the wood some. Since I started that I see one or two buzzing around occasionally, but they’ve stopped tearing holes in it at least and don’t stick around long!

I've decided to mostly let them bee..lol. The fact that they have run off most of the red wasp makes them tolerable. They don't sting so it's more about the gate than than anything but at this point, they have set up home and outside replacing the gate are not going to leave. Just part of having an old fence.

Excellent! I think they are pretty cool and I'm happy to see I'm not the only one okay with letting them 'bee'... they are good little guard bees!
